I just started playing the tinwhistle and I don´t know very many tunes. Could someone tell me the name of the tune that is played on the demo “movie” for the new Chieftan V3 low d whistle (located on the kerrywhistle website)?
If you mean this clip:
http://www.kerrywhistles.net/movies/ChieftainV3promo_0001.wmv
… then the tune is The Last Pint by Pierre Bensusan.
It’s best known from the recording Lúnasa: Lúnasa - 04 - Aibreann: The Last Pint.
Perhaps true when played as a whistle tune. I’d think the original guitar treatment by Bensusan is rather well known too. ![]()

Maybe, if you’re into that newfangled DADGAD nonsense.

MTGuru, a Luddite was never so conservative. ![]()
i just got a lunasa tune book (lunasa: the music 1996-2001); you can order it from their website–the sheet music for the last pint in Bb is on pg 6 and in g maj or pg 7. i’m going to start trying to learn it as soon as i finish that tune Mtguru posted… (in about a month ![]()
it’s nice; it’s not produced all that well (kind of looks like someone photocopied it and stapled it together
but it has a ton of tunes, some b&w white photos, and the linear notes on a lot of them are nice–especially the one about how Donogh Hennessey proposed. ![]()
or you could probably just ask Mtguru to listen to it and write out the abc notation for you by ear. ![]()
cheers,
eric
Thanks for the info, Eric! I’ve had a couple of Lunasa tunes stuck in my head for weeks now, but no way to extract them via the whistle. I’m at a stage where I learn tunes kind of half-by-ear, but resorting to the sheet music when I get temperamental about my inability to figure out the tricky bits.
you’re welcome. me too.
i want to get away from sheet music, but for now it too frustrating sometimes…
cheers,
eric
I picked up a copy of “lunasa: the music 1996-2001,” along with the group’s new CD, when they came thru the D.C. area last month … Just to get this thread completely off subject, I’d have to politely disagree with Eric’s assessment of the book’s production values: It’s a nicely done little book.
They have another collection of sheet music I have not checked out (“Notai”), here: http://www.shopcreator.com/mall/lunasa/products/product-3050676.stm
Thanks MTGuru, that´s the clip, and also thanks to everyone else who put their 2 cents in.
FWIW, forcing myself to give up the dots and learn strictly by ear has paid huge dividends. Those tunes that I learned by ear are committed to memory while the tunes learned from the dots…not so much! It is tough at first, but with practice you’ll get it. Force yourself to do it or you’ll never get there. My 2 cents.
Since I had a few moments, I wrote out the harmonies, too. I hope the Lúnasa boys don’t mind.

I stand in awe. Where’s the “bow down with both hands” emoticon? Thanks MT.

Nice! Isn’t their a third whistle part? ![]()
Feadoggie
Yes, there’s also some noodly 3rd whistle part happening in the background. ![]()
I only just came across that tune and did an Amazon download for that one. It’s my current fave on the playlist. I just love it! Wish I had a low whistle now… Should also learn to read those ABC’s. ![]()
Or go here. Cut and paste the ABCs into the window then print a copy of the score or save it to your computer. Doesn’t get any simpler.
