Trying to please kids

When I was playing outside yesterday, some of the neighborhood kids came over and asked why I never play any songs that they know. So, to make a long story short, I managed to pull “Baby Mine” out of my backside. I stumbled a few times, as I had never played it before, but the kids were happy.

So, I when I went back inside, I recorded it to hear how it “really” sounded.

It is VERY rough with some squawks and improper timing, but overall, I think it does suit itself well to a whistle.

What do you guys think? Is it worth trying to perfect it?

If you like, though I’m not familiar with the song… I can do a passable stairway to heaven - the chorus only. I thought about working out an arrangement for the whole song, but it didn’t hold my attention compared to ITM… it wasn’t worth it for what’s essentially a musical joke, though it actually is a very pretty melody.

But, the thing is, you should do what’s enjoyable for you, and if you can pick up contemporary songs by ear, then hey, why not.

Disney tunes from their cartoon movies can be very melodic and get children’s attention. If you can’t play them by ear, there are a lot of books for flute or beginning piano that you can easily transpose. Kids love to try to guess what you are playing and it can be a good game and way to interest them in learning an instrument.

Dunno, I just brainwash all mine with Irish/English/Welsh/World folk. I have five between three and fifteen…the three year old sings jigs to herself, my son at 8 loves folk music, the 11 and 13 yo think Eliza Carthy’s great, and even the eldest likes The Corrs over most modern drivel (I don’t, but it’s a fair compromise on long journeys).

hmm, I’ll have to look into other disney songs. The kids really lit up when I was playing. (I just placed and order of Megs to give to some of the interested ones. You can’t beat the price of those and so far, I’ve had good luck with their quality, even if I don’t personally prefer the sweetone sound.) Thanks for helping spark an idea.
