Does anyone know of a suitable tune for the triple jig that can be played on Scottish smallpipes?

Can you name (and preferably point to) some tunes you would typically play for it? Then I might be able to suggest something similar…

on one of the altan albums, the third cut is a jig called roaring waters. it is, i believe, not a traditional jig but rather one of their composition. it goes great on small pipes. it has 5 part, 3 of which are 100% in the first octave. it has some crans which you can do on the smallpipes as a throw on d. it has some nice triplets. really have fun with it.
but you asked for a triple jig. is that what some of us would call a slip jig?

I think he means ‘treble’ jig? I’ve only ever had to play this in the Feis context.

The tune is played much more slowly (maybe 50-75% slower) than for the regular jig dances. Tunes like the Lilting Banshee and Donnybrook Fair seem to work out OK.

Thanks for the ideas. There is a new waitress at an all night diner I go to who does Irish dancing. I brought in a set of smallpipes I had just finished making to show my buddies. I started playing a reel. She was on the other side of the restaurent nearly dropped her tray and started dancing. :laughing: She’s always asking for a triple/treble jig and I keep telling her that these are SSP’s and I don’t kow the music for Irish dancing, but she doesn’t seem to care. I’m not taking my uilleann pipe out in cold weather to a diner during bar rush. SSP’s I can make more of, UP’s…not quite yet.

I’m lookign at the dots for Roaring Waters and wondering where you are replacing crans with d-throws. I’m guessing you’re playing low Ds as low A on the SSP chanter, right?

Crans are possible on SSP. I heard a piper play King of Laois and played a cran on low A. Because of the SSP chanter’s bore some of the bottom hand technique isn’t as clear as on GHB.

Marc, have you had a go at making Border/Lowland pipes? Those are high on my list of lusted-after instruments.

No border pipes yet. Maybe I’ll lay my hands on some plans some day. Truth be known though, they aren’t high on the priority list for projects right now. Some day.
