The latest volume of An Píobaire mentions a new CD out called Trí agus Trí, with Pól Ó Ceallaígh on hurdy gurdy and Jimmy O’Brien-Moran on UPs. Does anyone know this album? Is it mostly hurdy gurdy with a bit of UPs in the background, or a fair mix? Worth getting?
Hi!
I have it on order so I can tell you in a week or so. As Pól Ó Ceallaígh is Paul Kelly of " The Kelly Family" my guess is that it will be a fair amount of piping.
I always liked the combination of pipes and hurdy gurdy. I got some scandinavian stuff with pipes, hurdy gurdy and keyed fiddles that blends together very well. I’ll see if I can find some samples if you’re interested.
It wasn’t that easy to get the CD as I though. After reading the article in the last issue of An Píobaire I thought it was a 2004 re-release of the 1997 Trí agus Trí . My local vendor (who has been an expert in finding rare CD’s in the past) can’t find any information about a re-release and the 1997 distribution seem to be out of print.
Anyone else here that got some more information on this, a CD id number or name of the distributor?
Disk id of the 1997 CD was: de098b12 but there is no information of the distributor
Maybe this CD was something Paul made and sold by himself?
Anyway, I might be able to get a used CD that my helpful friend found on the net. I’ll let you know djm, how things turn out.
Hey there. After a Piper’s Gathering two summers ago, and leaving Jimmy O’Brien-Moran to return to Ireland, I stumbled across the aforementioned release in a used-CD store near my apartment. Very odd to find such a thing in a used-CD store!
The CD is wonderful. There’s a good dose of piping intermixed with the hurdy-gurdy playing. There’s a couple of songs in Irish and French, solo, with said hurdy-gurdy. Jimmy’s piping is quite nice, in my opinion, and is highly enjoyable. The only drawback is that the well-played bodhrán is mixed a bit high on the bass end. I say this is a drawback because I tend to crank my bass to make the drones a bit more present but I can’t on this CD because the bodhrán will then be deafening.
