Travis King first impressions

Travis King is a new flutemaker in Victoria, BC Canada.

After putting down a deposit on a Brophy, I trolled around for other Canadian makers and his page cropped up. I was able to meet him this morning in his shop, and I was right blown away. I walked out with a keyless in blackwood and German silver.

He’s working in blackwood, mopane, boxwood, and cocobolo. The sound, intonation, and level of finish is just far, far beyond what would be implied by his prices. The local university flute professor already has one.

For reference, my players are a Dulcet Improved 8 key, Cochrane keyless (the Mopane Cannon), and a Burns low A in blackwood.

The T. King is thick walled, giving it burbly ornaments and comfy spacing. It’s a long footed 5 piece with a full lined head and tuning slide. It has the pratten power of the Cochrane with the even timbre of the Dulcet. I’m totally in love.

I’ll update this when I have more playing time in. For now, though, check out your local new maker. They may blow you away.

PS Jon and Casey, I still adore your flutes.

Update: Got the 3rd octave working. The G is shockingly clear and in tune, not that I use it much. Also, the back pressure is quite satisfactory.

Hello, thank you for the post! I’ve been looking at T. King flutes but cannot seem to find a video of one. Would you by any chance be able to post one? No worries if not!

Love to but my lip is so out of shape it’ll be a bit. Visually, his website pics represent the flute well. It’s very cleanly made.

No worries at all, I reached out to Travis directly and am going to place an order. Thank you for your time!
