List your top 10 tunes that could be considered part of the “traditional core uilleann repertoire”…
I think there are certainly some core tune ‘families’ - a lot of the Colliers-type reels are both popular today and historically (as far as early recordings can tell us).
I imagine every piper in history must have knocked out the Coolin at least once
3 of the big reels for me are:
colonel fraser’s
the flogging reel
the bucks of oranmore
i’ve always found these 3 very challenging and quite daunting
i think this topic has come up before
Three popular jigs are,
The Micky jig,
Dont get your knickers in a twist. and
Mollys gone to the shop for some bread and butter.

Top 10 doesn’t leave much room to move but here goes, ten tunes that embody technique, style, and musical depth.
Set dances: The Garden of Daisies, The Blackbird
Reels: The Salamanca, Garret Barry’s
Jigs: The Maid at the Spinning Wheel, Willie’s Single
9/8 jigs: An Phis Fhliuch, Colm’s Dusty Miller
Hornpipes: The Cuckoo’s Nest, The Boys of Bluehill
I haven’t included any slow airs or pieces. They are in their own class.

PS Where do I sign up for the Anti-Colonel Fraser Lobby Group?
Where can I get the dots for Rory’s favourites?
I thought you can only sign up for the anti-Frazer lobby group if you are already a gold member of the “No Bucks” Front.
Welcome to the Anti-Colonel Fraser Lobby Group (incorporating the No-Bucks Front).
If you have ever learnt any part of Colonel Fraser, or have a memory of enjoying any part either audibly or participatory, the Ministry Of Truth will shortly contact you. If you profess allegiance to the Lobby but harbor positive emotions in any small degree towards the tune, either audibly or participatory, the Ministry of Love will shortly be in touch.
Seriously though:
Reels: paddy on the rail road / the scholar
Jigs: queen of the rushes / humour of ballyloughlin
Hornpipes: tailor’s twist / cronin’s
3/4 waltzy-types: Si Beag Si mor / tabhair dom do liamh
Sundry: sonny’s mazurka
Hello
The NPU brought out a CD of Tommy Kearney’s piping and a CD of Sean McAloon’s piping. Either or both track listings will give you the core piping repertoire.
