The ITMS doesn’t have a very extensive library of Irish flute music to consult. As a non-profit organization, there aren’t a lot of funds to purchase new (or old) releases, and I’m saving what I can for recording sessions for WFO volume 3. However, I’m offering a trade.
If you’d like a copy of the 2-CD sets “Wooden Flute Obsession” volumes 1 or 2 (http://www.worldtrad.org), and can supply any of the recordings listed here, new or used:
however, I don’t really like this strategy Kev. I feel like it kind of “devalues” the Obsession CD set. I bought them from you, one at a time, for was it like $25 opr $27 per disk, shipped, now you are throwing them to the wind for the gift of a contributed used CD. hummmm…
I would prefer to see you or a “marketing volunteer” promote them more aggressively, enlist dealerships or traditional and folk instruments, advertise them “word of mouth” on the internet on all the hundreds of yahoo groups and boards. Sell them for $$$$$$$$$$$…!!!
Just throwing this out there bro. It’s your call.
But, seems to me, if ya sold tons and tons more, you could buy your library, - - - if ya want donations, advertise what you want and have your accountant prepare and mail “tax-deductable” receipt documentation. Recipiants can “fill in” the fair value amount $$$$$ of their donation themselves. Folks here in the States do that like crazy for tax deductions. Hey, I know, I am a CPA… I do taxes 5 months out of the year, (and rest the other 7).
Eg: the Goodwill Stores, Disabled American Vets, etc. You take a pile of used stuff and get a donation receipt. Then it comes off your taxes…
Jus trying to be helpful Kev. As I said - good luck to you and your worthwhile organization.
{maybe you could ask for help on these sites, ask the menbers to help promote and “sell” copies of Obsession, anywhere and everywhere they can]… don’t want to belabour the point but time and services donated to a non-profit is tax deductible too. (ha)… i’m not kiddin’. Now you see why I have so many loving $$$$$$$$$$ clients.
Well, I haven’t had any luck with monetary donations, although now that the subject’s come up… the ITMS does have our letters from the IRS and State of California indicating that folks (who don’t just take the standard deductions) can donate cash, vehicles, instruments, CDs, etc. and deduct the amounts from their taxes. However, the reality is that the organization is boot-strapped, and runs entirely from the sales of the WFO CDs. BTW, volunteer time and services are NOT tax-deductible, except for actual costs associated with those services (such as paper and inks for a graphic artist, but not their time, which frankly is the major effort).
Now admittedly, the CDs cost less to manufacture than they sell for, even with recording, licensing and mastering costs, which makes it more economical for us to trade for these new or used CDs, than to buy them. I’d rather use the greater amount of funds for the projects themselves, and so far have just done without. I think I purchased 2 CDs last year via the ITMS (and not many more personally), so that I could insure that WFO2 got printed (along with a re-press of WFO1).
OFF-TOPIC - I saw you list the Frets.com website. This has always been a great resource, and the folks on RMMGA have often spoken highly of you. I’ve got a Don Musser BRW Dread #38. Great guitar, but been exposed to some mold along a bedroom wall. I’ve never succeeded in getting the smell out - any suggestions?
Not true Blackhawk. I know you have a hard-on for me ever since i pointed out the fact that your name “Blackhawk” is actually a single-action Ruger magnum handgun. Which probably flies in the face of a liberal-leftist daisy. not that I’d be bothered by what I say if I was you. BTW, I would be happy to trade my handle “Parcour” for “Blackhawk” if that would work for you? send me a PM if you’d like.
Kevin is correct on the “donated services” tax issue, I just said that to punk a wooley booger. I am on the Boards of several charitable and not for profit 501c3 organizations and the best we can “deduct” is actually our gas and mileage back and forth to the meetings, but what you don’t know can’t hurt you unless you get audited, i always say…
Kevins organization has a lot of potential and I think it will find it’s niche one day (i.e. - it’s base of support). More than anything, I made the post I made to try and “spark” it up a bit. I have talked it up incessently on the bodhran web site, I should have send 100 copies out to Craiciann for the drummers next week, It would nave been a sellout (but i was too slow and stoned to get her done - as usual).
I have both of the “Obsessions” cd’s and they are staples in my player, wishing I had taken up a real instrument when I was but a lad. I could sooner jump the shark than learn an ombuschure (sp) at my advanced age in life (in fact, I’m 74 years young)…
Best regards Kev. I hold you in much higher esteem now that I know you are a guitar player. There is a great liklihood that i will be making a contribution, or at least a bulk purchase of CD’s in the near future…
Gods speed brother…
(sorry for the marginal “tude” in my rantings tonight blackie, I have had 4 Percocet and 8 Coors already,… and the night is still young - par for the course, get it? Whatever combination of “25” i can do in one night - so for now, i am only half way there… if I could only stand uop and get to the fridge, .
Not true, Parcour. I lost all respect for you when, over on the Political thread, you said you were committed to the destruction of Israel. I have read hardly any of your posts since then. I find it illuminating that you expect me to be more offended by your take on my screen name than on your desire to see lots of Jewish people die violently.
YOU. !!! , - can just so carelessly disregard my feelings? Did it all mean that little to you… Nothing but a fling, a night of fun. I don’t think so…Not to me anyway. There was something there, - you can deny it you beastie boy, but it was real. And i will never forget.
Ps - Kevin, what are you actually going to use a “library” for. A historical archive, a repository of the tradition, great, but hasn’t that been done.
Not for historical purposes, as the Irish Traditional Music Archive is, as well as material at some Universities. I just need to have some additional familiarity about tunes, players, etc. for future projects. Some out-of-print items are being considered for reissue, if sufficient demand. I’m also exploring small-run CD-R printing (such as the Smithsonian is doing) for making/keeping some items available (all with artist & composer permissions, of course).
