Just realized that brass isn’t quite my thing as I want to backpack my whistles and can’t because the brass will dent.
Hence, I would like Burke D and C Composite whistles, and I will happily trade my brasses for them, its a weird idea so I don’t know if there any takers, but worth a shot!

PVC tubing would do the trick.
I have done some backpacking near Denver, CO as my sister lives there–before I became this rabid, obsessive whistler. My dream is to take my Burke and play on a Rocky Mountain outcropping (if I can get the air)! All the woodland creatures will hop up to listen! I think Burkes may be tougher than you think, but if not there should surely be some kind of case you could improvise, maybe from tupperware or something from a kitchen accessories store. Perhaps a case with a belt loop you could hang from your chest strap (for a fast draw)?
I have found my homemade cases from PVC pipe take to camping and hiking very well. However, the round, slippery outside can get away from you. I pad the inside with a small piece of fleece or a bandana to prevent damage as it bounces down the hillside.
If you don’t want the weight of an extra case, you might follow the example of one of my old backpacking partners. He would use electrical tape to attach the sections of his fly rod to the outside his tent poles. Very rigid protection. Just the weight of the tape.
