Greetings all! After years of denying it, I have finally accepted the fact that the Uilleann sound reaches farther into me than any other instrument. I have been reading through your forums, and appreciate all of your comments and useful info. After listening to a clip played on a Lynch chanter (which literally made me misty-eyed), I have decided to embark on the wonderful and terrible journey that is learning the UPs.
Having said all of that, I am in the market for a used Lynch practice set (if anyone would ever part with such a fine instrument). Or, if someone has a half-set that they would sell, I would also consider that option. In addition, if any of you have any tips for the newest guy on the block, I would greatly appreciate them. I am currently in Arkansas, was looking at spending $1300 for a new practice set from Lynch (or $2600 for the half-set), and the tune was called Roisin Dubh, played by a forum member, unless I am mistaken. Reminded me of tunes that my grandmother used to sing to me when I was a lad …
Luckily I live fairly close to guys like Michael (who gave me my first into leson on th UP’s) and Patrick, as well as many other very good pipers in the So. Cal U.P. Club. Good resources like these can really help you stick with this very difficult instrument.
