Tommy Reck plays “The Scholar-Salamanca-Tom Steele”(Medley of Irish Reels) and “Alexander’s & O’Higgins”(Medley of Irish Hornpipes). A fantastic record. The hornpipes were re released on the “From Galway to Dublin” record from Rounder.

Tommy Reck was truly a great piper. If you get a chance to listen to any of the tragically few recordings of his playing, don’t pass it up!

Much as I’d like to make heap big buckage off of this classic audio (actually I can’t, don’t own the records, 
) , I’ve been more keen for a long time on seeing a good release of more 78s, which are apparently above board - Phillipe Varlet mentioned on the uilleann mailing list that 78s releases aren’t indebted in copywright to anyone if they’re old enough - maybe even if they’re newer (50 years or so, like these Recks) you can get away with if you don’t mind being villanized. Is that how you spell that? Sounds like I’m going to be turned into ice cream! Turned into a villian, is what I mean.
How many reading this would love to own a CD of piping 78s of Clancy, Reck, more Rowsome, like that? And guys you’ve never heard of, Phil Martin, Martin Bierne and the like? Would you cough up $10 for such a record?

I did a survey on my site a couple of years ago about this, but it was specifically targeting Tommy Reck. Hoards of people said yes, they would definitely buy a re-release of Tommy Reck’s Stone in the Field.
There is so much other stuff out there of Tommy’s that would be perfect on a CD too. Ennis’ “Return From Fingal” would be a good example to follow. There is so much Tommy stuff a CD could be jammed with valuable material.
Maybe NPU plan to do it? I know that they’re planning an O’Meally CD next… not sure what the current funding situation has done to that idea though!!!
Maybe they want to keep the private recordings private, or just wait until everyone that recorded these tapes are dead so that no one can sue them? Why not just figure something amicable out with the people that made these recordings if they are indeed still of this world?
