Tommy Peoples

So I’ve been listening to The Bothy Band’s 1975 album, alot.
Every time I hear Peoples fiddling, well its just fecking breath-taking!
Yes the whole album is a delight, not weak spot I can detect, but when that fiddle goes-
my heart starts to sing!

Yeah, he’s pretty good, isn’t he?

If you want to go hard-core and hear what he was doing in 1974, you might like this: http://ceolalainn.blogspot.com/2009/10/tommy-peoples-exciting-session-with-one_13.html

You can download it free at this site since it’s out of print.

… not necessarily the case, being out of print doesn’t mean it’s out of copyright. I’m not condoning (or otherwise) the downloading of “old” recordings, but in the (unlikely?) event of that “knock on the door”, claiming you “thought it was OK 'cos it was out of print” quite possibly won’t hold water … unfortunate, but true in many (most?) countries :frowning:

My opinion is that he is no band player - his sound is so unique that it can hardly merge with any band’s sound. I suppose that the whole band rock quite hides the real quality and mastery of Tommy’s playing, and Kevin Burke was a more proper replacement for the Bothy Band.
But I absolutely love Tommy People’s solo works as well as Molloy-Brady-Peoples.
Tommy is a genius of a very special kind.

I was just reading on Tommy’s Offical Site.

Tommy has never received any payment from the Bothy Band album…one of the biggest selling traditional albums of all time, and still selling today.

A raw deal if ever there was one.

On the bright side it looks as though he is direct marketing his latest work.
Anyone have it?

I think you’ll find that webpage is obsolete, the Quiet Glen was new about fourteen years ago.

Thanks for the heads up.

i still find it remarkable that you can see these players doing regular pub gigs that you don’t need to pay to get into - i remember seeing an ad for the guitarist steve vai a while ago where he was offering students the chance to jam with him for i think about £250 - it’s not quite so good for tommy and his peers that they don’t make mega-bucks but it’s good for the rest of us

I have been friends with Tommy for thirty years. In my opinion Tommy and Seamus Ennis changed the way Irish music was played. Think of acting… there was acting before Marlon Brando and acting after Marlon Brando. Tommy and Seamus, in their approach to the music, put rolls and grace notes and improvisations, where they were not expected. Tommy’s playing was like the deep blues touching the heart and the despair in all human beings. The fact of the matter is that no recording has captured Tommy and Seamus’ playing. When one listens to them think of Bach or Beethoven.

Speaking of Tommy (his cracking “Corner House” set on Paddy Keenan’s “Na Keen Affair” just popped up on my player), I think the tunes he and Paddy crank out on The “Live From The Katherine Cornell Theatre” recording are just terrific.

IIRC, you can buy the solo Tommy and Tommy/Paddy tracks individually on iTunes, although the whole recording is darned fine so it might be worth the $9.99
