Tommy Dion Bb tweaked generation

I just got one in the mail. Took it out of the well packed container (thanks Tommy) and it played right out of the box. Wow. It sounds great. Put it on the tunner and it is spot on.

Tommy does a great job in my opinion. I got sound and the scale without any issues. I am in love with this whistle. For the price, it is a great deal.

Just my humble opinion.

Where did you get it? I’m curious just how much better these ā€œtweakedā€ whistles are compared to a random Generation? I find it odd that a brand new product would require tweaking.

It isn’t so much that the brand new product requires tweaking. Like anything else, it can be modified to suit different tastes. While Generation whistles (and the like) can be played well enough out of the box they are the product of mass production and as such there are prone to a certain margin of inconsistency and variation (though that margin is quite often exaggerated). Just about anything can be ā€œimprovedā€ by the standards of the player-doesn’t necessarily mean that it was bad before and has been made good. I’ve even purchased tweaked whistles that I didn’t much care for but with some tinkering of my own I turned them into whistles that I liked. I guess that makes them a tweaked tweaked whistle.

To date I’ve tried three different tweaked Generation Bb whistles and none of them came close to my stock Generation Bb in terms of how I want them to play and sound. Every tweak I’ve tried so far in that model has sucked all the ā€œumphā€ out of it. This is the first I’ve heard of the Dion tweak… I’d be curious to know about what was modified.

I got mine from Tommy directly. I’ve played native american flutes in the past. I am no expert when it comes to whistles. I am enjoying this whistle and I know that some on the flute portal where there is a lot of naf, that some have hated the generation that wasn’t tweaked. just my observations and 2 cents.

I have a cpvc whistle from Tommy and I’m trying to decide between one of his tweaked Bb whistles and one of his handmade pvc ones. He does good work!

I also play NAF. Do you know if they make NAF in major keys so that the fingering would be the same as the tin whistle? My NAF is Gminor and I really like it but sometimes I wish I had one in a major key.

Several makers provide Native American flutes in diatonic major keys. Try Leonard McGann (aka Lone Crow flutes) in Virginia.

Best wishes.

Russ Venable - He makes for Mary Youngblood.

Check the flute portal. there is a discussion forum on irish whistles. In there you will find some makers who do diatonic scale. Usually higher keys because you have to add the slowing chamber and nest length to the sound chamber. That can be fairly long making the stretch tough.

I have a low D# in mode 1 and 4 traditional tuning and it is a stretch sometimes. The bore is 1 and 1/8
