Tom Doorley, flute player

In November of 2011, Blayne Chastain and I had the opportunity to go to Ireland for 10 days to film flute players for our documentary, “The Keymaster: Patrick Olwell’s Story”. We met and interviewed 14 flute players, traveled over 1,000Km, and had one of the most memorable trips of our lives.

Toward the end of our journey we ended up back in Dublin, and went to the Comhaltos Ceoltoiri Eireann center to meet up with Tom Doorley, one of the founding members of the band Danu. He is not only a fantastic flute player, but also a teacher and preservationist for Irish traditional music. He is so knowledgeable, and his stories so interesting, that we stayed longer than planned and ended up with a bit of sound in the background from an event in the room next door, but it was totally worth it. In this clip you also get the first BTS view of me with our camera setup, and Blayne rocking out with Tom on ‘Trim the Velvet’…

I hope you enjoy watching and listening, and if you do, please visit our Vimeo link https://vimeo.com/ondemand/keymaster to watch the trailer. “The Keymaster: Patrick Olwell’s Story” is available there as a download, or on DVD and Blu-ray from irishflutestore.com

Wonderful! Thanks again.

Thanks again Jem. Good to hear and see these fine musicians playing away there. Interesting also the different playing styles. My favourites so far are Harry and June as there is space in their flow of notes which allows the tune/melody to stand out. Perhaps this has something to do with them living in a rural environment, a slower pace. Tom is a fine flute player, a virtuoso, but his hectic Dublin rush hour of notes in this video clip tends to leave me gasping for air. I’m not criticsing, just commenting. It’s instructive and inspiring to listen to these flute players with their different takes and personalities

I really appreciate all the positive comments, and I agree that there’s a wide range of styles out there, something for everybody for sure. I’m about to move on to some of the American players we interviewed, so it will be interesting to see what people think of their style as well.
