tionol trip planning

As you all know this website is a wonderful resource (thanks Dale!). Nonetheless, reading about the pipes and listening to recordings only gets me so far down the path. It is time for me to observe these beasties and their owners in the wild.

In searching the web it appears that many tionols are in the spring and early summer. If I could ask a favor of this wise and noble readership. I live in Terre Haute, Indiana; are there tionol you would reccomend that I might attend in the coming year?

I am very interested in the Uilleann pipes, but know almost nothing about them (other than I love their sound). I currently take whistle lessons (which I enjoy immensely) and someday I hope to include the pipes in my learning.

So I am looking for a tionol(s) where I can be a fly on the wall with a few opportunities to ask questions and perhaps examine some pipes. I thank any of you in advance for your time, patience, and generosity.

You could look ahead to April 2006 when the St. Louis Tionol takes place. It’s an easy drive from Terre Haute. It’s a fun weekend of sessions, concerts and graded Saturday workshops. Shelbyville piper Jim Smith is usually there, and my wife and I have made the trip the last 2 years. We’re already anxious to return and renew old acquaintances with the pipers we’ve met there.

3fip, there’s a handy Piping Calendar of Events on AnimaVitae that you might wish to peruse: http://www.animavitae.com/calendar

Bill, djm, jim,

Thank you for the replies, much appreciated. Let me add one other query. If not limited to a close proximity (Indiana)…what are the better/bigger Tionols in North America? I don’t intend to step on anyones toes so if you are not comfortable publicly posting your response just pm me.

Again thanks so much for your input.

Well, I recently returned from the Piper’s Gathering in Killington, Vermont.
It’s not strictly Uilleann piping since there are workshops and concerts involving other bellows blown pipes, but I always have a great time there.
I’m not able to comment first hand on other tionols so others will have to weigh in on their respective favorites.

3fip, I’m not sure where abouts you are, so I don’t know if its easier for you to travel east or west in the US. If east is
good, the next big one is the East Coast Pipers Tionól: http://www.eastcoastpipers.com/.
If west is better, the next big one is the Southrn California Pipers Tion

The SoCal. Tionól, Oct. 7-9, in sunny San Juan Capistrano.
