Tinwhistle Poem

(I posted this on GC a couple of days ago, and figured I should share it with y’all here on C&F)
Here’s a poem I was required to do for a class I’m currently taking, and I thought I’d share it with y’all. Copyright is held by me, and only me. Please don’t take it without my permission first.

Thanks.

ALL ABOUT IRISH TINWHISLTES - IN TEN PARTS
(Also Entitled: Ten Ways of Looking at Irish Tinwhistles)

I
A rolled, metal tube,
With six holes,
And a plug at the end.
Such simplicity in the design
Of an Irish Tinwhistle.

II
Ancient as the hills,
Yet such sweet music still flows
Forth in modern times.

III
“Is that a recorder?” she asked.
An upheaval of indignation, shock, and
Irritation arose in my mind for such
A heretical comment.
Politely, “No ma’am, it’s an Irish Whistle.”

IV
A soft, warm glow of light
Illuminates the corner booth of the Pub.
Untouched drinks sit on the table,
Lying next to bones and spoons set down
For just a moment.
A withered old man gently cradles his
Ancient Clarke D dressed in its
Classic black and gold livery.
Fingers cares the worn holes, and
A sweet, yet plaintive Aire springs forth.
Hearts pause, then throb in time
With the Whistle’s
Soulful Song.

V
The silver moon rises in a dark sky.
Feet thud upon the frozen ground,
Beating the steadfast rhythm of
The timeless jig
As played by the lone whistler.

VI
Warm sunlight floods through the
Boughs of the pines in spring.
A Whistle trills and sings like a bird.

VII
Sitting on the couch, watching TV.
Absently my fingers creep towards my
Favorite Tinwhistle.

VIII
Conical bore, cylindrical bore,
Plastic, wood, or metal fipple…
Each so similar, yet so different, and
Each with a voice of its own,
Hidden within.

IX
Smooth but chilly metal lies
Beneath my fingers.
Warm breath, a note, and a squeak.
Why, my friend, are you so touchy?
Must be the humidity.

X
Small and inconspicuous,
Yet I know you best of all.
You have a voice, a personality all your own.
I’ll always play my favorite Whistle,
Who’s comfortable, like an
Old friend.

BRAVO!!!
