just like the title says… different websites say either… is either correct/incorrect? I’ve been playing with thumb on the bottom of the frog I just want to make sure that isnt a problem
I think the standard classical grip offers more control over the bow than any other hold I know of. I use a pretty standard hold myself. Thumb between the bow and hair, touching the frog. Personally, i think the thumb is one of the most important parts of Irish music. I need my thumb against the frog, to have something to pull against. This allows my hand and wrist to be relaxed. Your grip doesn’t work for me. But if it works for you, go for it. it’s all personal taste.
FWIW, the bow hold was not easy at first. I spent months fine-tuning my hold. Decided on the classical hold, and when I got a teacher, he explained the above. After another few months, it all clicked. It takes time, and nothing with the fiddle is 100% comfortable at first. Good luck!
I don’t think either is correct or incorrect. I’ve experiemented with both, but always return to the classical grip.
Wouldn’t Thumb On The Frog make a terrific tune title.
Or even Between Stick And The Hair, but that sounds a tad naughty…
