Thoughts on Satine Bloodwood

Hello all,

Just wondering what the general concensus was on bloodwood for say, drones. Was looking (drooling rather) over the pics of your pipes thread and was imagining some possible future drones setups in my head for when i can afford them. :laughing:

Iā€™ve had high hopes for it since i first read the name in one of Alan Ginsbergā€™s plans. Itā€™s hard, heavy, and beautiful to boot. Iā€™m right now finishing up a set of Northumbrian pipes in bloodwood, and iā€™m thrilled with how theyā€™re working out. (Only 10 chanter keys to go! :boggle: )

The only other bloodwood pipes iā€™ve come across are a set of Scottish small pipes by ā€œRolf of Sweden.ā€

Iā€™ve done a few sets of smallpipes in bloodwood. Itā€™s a lot cheaper than blackwood or ebony and turns a deep rich red brown as it ages. Very nice tonal qualities and smells a bit like chocolate when being worked. I think itā€™s better for bellows blown pipes than mouthblown as it sometimes tends to split at the stocks. Perhaps those few cracks Iā€™ve witnessed were just faults in the original stock, because other pieces have held up very well to the ravages of moisture and piper spit. On the whole though, a very worthwhile wood. Bloodwood also makes nice magic wands for the niece and nephews who are huge Harry Potter fans. So am I. :blush:

Thatā€™s it!!! After I saw those smallpipes pics, I want a whole set in bloodwood!!! Itā€™s absolutely stunning. I also love the horn mounts. I love the color contarst between the two. Nowā€¦where is that Lotto ticket?

The red and black contrast would suitably serve as the Sith Lordā€™s uilleann pipes (for all you Star Wars geeks like me out there).

I think that Satine Bloodwood is probably my favorite of the ā€œsounds like pornstarā€ woods.

What kind of reg would this be? Iā€™ve never seen anything like this before, where a key on the top open a flap on the bottom of the reg. Would this be between the baritone and the bass regs in pitch?

That looks like the Thomas Kannmacher E reg key arrangement. Instead of a fourth reg to provide the E key, an external armature is attached to the side if the baritone reg to operate a key underneath the baritone reg. This was documented in the Seattle Piperā€™s Review Volume XXIII Number 1 - Winter 2004.
