While the rest of you are busy knuckle-dragging, let me say that lessons are a good thing at any stage of learning an instrument. But you can also teach yourself if you listen to performances and practice in a structured way, with the emphasis on structure. Learning alone may not be ideal - indeed it isn’t - but some of us have no choice. Books, CD’s and youtube are your friends. Aim at perfection and practice until you get it right. Good luck.
I recommend grabbing a digital voice recorder or a decent mic to record yourself playing then play it back and replay until you get the songs exactly how you want them. I started doing this a few years ago on my ocarina, the sound heard while playing was very very different to the sound others hear. I always thought my playing wasn’t very good but when listening from the perspective of the audience, it actually sounds a LOT better than what I was hearing otherwise.
