Thoroughly OT - Musical Tastes

Other than Celtic, what sort of music do you listen to? I have a certain preference for reggae myself, and have just gotten a flavor for Harlem stride piano.

OT of my OT T, I was listening to NPR this morning, and heard someone casually identified as “an leading Irish hip-hop photojournalist”. I was pleasantly amused by the image it provoked.

There’s something other than Celtic??
(Just kiddin’)

The blues, and I think of the Irish ballads/airs as the Irish blues.

This is Brigitte here. Well we are two people here with a big love for folk music of all directions BUT also an awful lot of other styles so if you are interested have a look in here http://www.overton.de/texte/linksundlists.htm and find on the folk CD list nearly all our CDs listed, Didgeridoo list what you may never have heard of  and on the mixed side (rock, trance, experimental etc.) probably 20% of our CDs, yet to be continued and to not forget that Colin probably owns all available Beatles CDs and I have not yet found the time to add these and a lot others in there. All the listed ones we (either him or myself or both) REALLY like… Have a good one Brigitte

Yeah, I know…my friends think I’m nuts but I listen to Mexican conjunto (ensemble)
music every day. A good “squeeze box” artist
coupled with a basso sexto guitar player is
just what the doctor ordered. Maravilloso
(wonderful) !

Ok, so I’m abnormal…
When I’m not listening to celtic folk, I really prefer metal…Korn, Metallica, Black Sabbath, that kinda thing.

I have about equal amounts of metal vs celtic CD’s laying around the house…in my car, I have two CD cases, one for each genre, and on long trips, I may switch between the two.

Greg

I like Bach and Vivaldi

Well, I really try to steer clear of “Celtic”, but I love Irish traditional, New England contra-dance music, Old-Timey, bluegrass, blues, guitar rock a la Joe Satriani and Steve Vai, Indian classical music (especially Carnatic), traditional music from various parts of Africa, Cape Breton traditional, Scottish traditional, and a lot of other types of music. The few kinds of music I can’t stand are New Age (sounds the same whether it’s played backwards or forwards), most radio pop, and showtunes - showtunes are the worst!!!
 Chris

Just to prove that we concertina players are a weird lot, the only other music I love to listen to (not play) is RAGTIME! Some of Joplin’s old tunes have a mysteriously gratifying effect on me - really don’t know why. My favorite of his rags is The Topliner - it’s just fantastic!

I’m a big Led Zeppelin fan. When I’m not listening to Irish Traditional I’m usually listening to Led Zeppelin. Oh yeah, and Jethro Tull.

Hmmm. Interesting topic.

I am mostly into Christian music but the same rules apply here  I like just about any style and tend towards rock/metal. I do not like music that sounds the same forward and backward either or from song to song and album to album - boring and no thanks

I am Acadian and I used to love listening to my grandparents playing old trad. Acadian music. I recently realized my parents lost this tradition (they unfortunately never played a beat of it!) and that it is up to me to recapture this before it dies within my family. I know my kids would love it. I see a fiddle in my future for sure. I love celtic stuff and there is lots of other traditional music here in Canada’s East Coast to pick from

By The Way (BTW) - For those who are into classical music, which I love, here is a cool site I just found today with free sheet music.

It will be interesting to try to play whistle to Handel’s Messiah

By far the biggest part of my CD collection is Irish trad, with some Scottish stuff. Apart from that I listen to Leonard Cohen and Verdi Opera, or belcanto opera more genrally.

I like almost anything except rap/hip hop. Other staples are Miles Davis, Beethoven symphonies, Brahms, and uh… Dixieland.

I listen to alot a zydeco some classical and older rock like bob seager.

Other than Irish and Scottish music I listen to Manchester stuff like Lush, Inspriral Carpets, Ride and newer stuff like The Doves, Travis, and Coldplay. One of my favorite all time bands is Rush. Lately it’s been Christmas music. :sunglasses:

Thanks for this topic! I will keep coming back to read the future posts. When I was twelve, my first love was electronic music because people were designing their own sounds. Then I discovered Appalachian Mountain music. I developed a preference for the minor modes, but I find the Beatles songs in major modes to be deeply moving. In my teens to early thirties I continued to listen to classically influenced heavy metal artists, mostly Yes, Led Zeppelin, but also lots of sixties artists like Hendrix, and I had a brief romance with Punk artists like Black Flag and the Dead Kennedys. I became aware of the Celtic and middle eastern roots in each artist’s respective styles, so I turned my ear toward the traditional music of every ethnicity. Now that I’m in my forties, my nerves just can’t handle the more frenetic musical styles, so I listen to classic Tangerine Dream, Robert Rich, Steve Roach, Michael Stearns, and some Brian Eno–but for some reason even the most “frenetic” Irish music makes me feel completely at peace and at home with it. My heritage is mixed but completely Celtic and I wonder if this connection is only coincidental. Oh, by the way, I haven’t been able to tolerate much vocals, pop vocals especially, for a long time–the words get in my head and I can’t get them out–so I listen to instrumental almost exclusively, except the birds singing in the neighborhood–they are my most favorite artists of all.

My favorite stuff is the bands that mix Irish
trad and rock music together. I also love punk, some of the harder rock music(it depends), but I also enjoy bluegrass, zydeco, and klezmer music too.

Other than Joanie, I too enjoy some of the modern Celtic stuff like Loreena McKennitt, Secret Garden, Eileen Ivers, etc. My favorite music is rock-n-roll-- Heart, Allman Brothers, Fleetwood Mac, as well as some 90s rockers like Melissa Ethridge and Sheryl Crow. Also dig Sarah McLachlan. Love the country/rock/blues hybrid stylings of Steve Earle and Lucinda Williams (it’s a southern thang!) Also into old-time–enjoying the O Brother Where Art Thou? soundtrack.

Anything but Hip Hopa and Rap! All depends on what genre I’m in the mood for!

indie rock stuff, “alternative” stuff, punk stuff, glam rock stuff, goth stuff, stuff, stuff, stuff. I’m sort of new to the whole celtic/trad stuff. I just got sick of all the glock in the rocknroll world. It really is pretty vapid right now, except for a few underground acts…

my cd collection is on my website, though I haven’t updated it in a while…

Err… besides celtic… Alternative-rock, Indie, Lo-fi, Punk. Nirvana, Korn, Smashing Pumpkins, Eels, Portishead etc.
Straight-ahead Jazz, Bebop, Swing, Bossa Nova. Milt Jackson, Oscar Peterson, AC Jobim, Chet Baker, and of course Miles Davis.
Classical, mainly baroque and romantic styles. Bach’s sacred music, Vivaldi’s sacred music, Chopin, Beethoven etc. Chinese classical music as well, with pipa soloing especially.
Lately I’ve taken to listening some backgroundish oldies like Edie Brickel as well.
Many genres besides most gospel music, most gothic music, trance, bubblegum pop albums (that means 95% of the boybands, and Britney “I’m a Slave for you” Spears) and phoney new age stuff.

Eld-“showing off”-arion =)
