I’ve had my Thornton D whistle for about 3 weeks now, slowly getting to grips with it. It is a fabulous whistle Thanks Tommy. but I have found the back pressure to be a bit odd.Its a bit difficult to explain but its a bit like there’s something in the windway, and yes I have checked.
Has anyone else out there found the same thing or is it just me
Yes, and if you compare the size of the windway to most other D whistles, you will notice it is considerably smaller. Even with the greater back pressure, it is still a very nice whistle.
Hi all,
I make the whistles like that kinda on purpose.
With a narrower windway you end up with a bit of back pressure.
But also you end up with a little less chiff, a sweeter tone and better tone hole response, so it’s a trade off.
However I am experimenting on a new windway design that results in less backpressure and as a result less clogging, but with the same tone.
It’ll be a while before I’ll have them out there. I’m starting to make a few low D’s and I’m also working on a few uilleann pipe chanters and sets of drones.
I’ll have info on my website when things are ready.
Let me know when the low D is ready. I definitely want to try one. Don’t know if it matters, but I like the back pressure. I think it sounds best when it’s pushed a bit.
Hi
Been playing me Thornton quite a bit since my first post and I,m getting used to the back pressure.
I’m also more relaxed about it and tend not to notice as much.
As Tucson Whistler says ‘it sounds best when its pushed a bit’
