This thread WAS totally useful....

OK, you have all heard them, those tiny bits of advice and encouragment that help you get through the day or even through life itself. Things like: “Look both ways before crossing the street.” or “Don’t take candy from strangers.”

I know there are some good ones out there. What are the little snippets of advice that you have found useful. Make them whistle related, or music if you like as well.

Keep your chin up!

Wherever you may be,
Wherever you may go,
Never eat
Yellow Snow.

never trust a man with a low D up his where the sun don’t shine.

My favorite, from Shel Silverstein:

Always sprinkle pepper in your hair.
Always sprinkle pepper in your hair.
‘Cause then, if you are kidnapped by a wild barbazoop,
Who sells you to a ragged hag who wants you for her soup,
She’ll pick you up and sniff you,
And then she’ll sneeze. (“Achoo!”)
And say, “My tot, you’re much too hot. I feel you’ll never do!”
And with a shout she’ll throw you out, and you’ll run away from there,
And soon you will be safe at home a’sittin’ in your chair.
If you always always always always always always
always always always sprinkle pepper in your hair!

Always buy what kids are selling at roadside stands.

Whether you think you can
Or you think you can’t -

You’re right.

Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.

We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?

Actually, who are you NOT to be.

Your playing small doesn’t serve the world.

  • Nelson Mandela

Never put off until tomorrow what you can put off forever.

Moxy: When I worked for the defense industry, I spent time in South Africa. I was there while Nelson Mandela was in prison. What I experienced in that country defies description. Nelson Mandela is one of my heroes.

Advice I learned many years ago: Never criticize what you do not understand. When you do, you are a fool.

Cheers.
Byll

Byll, now that is very very good advice.

Words I Aspire to Live By:

  • Fix the problem not the blame.
  • Don’t sweat the small stuff.
  • Keep a sense of humor, God does.
  • Think the best of folks, it challenges them to improve.
  • Redeem the time, sufficient unto today, is the evil thereof.
  • People in stone houses shouldn’t through glass.
  • Direction is always better than correction.
  • Rather than trying to avoid doing bad, seek to do good.
  • Live and let Live
  • Take courage each day to live free.

And my most important keynote …

The bigger they are, the harder they hit.

You can’t sh*t me, I’ve got a turd in each pocket.

80% of all statistics are made up on the spot.

A whistle a day, keeps the divorce lawyers busy.

Pigs and goats alike, care nothing for opera.

Never turn your nose up at food you have never tasted.

If you are eating something unknown, like it, and then find out what it REALLY is don’t get grossed out.

You get what you pay for.

If you are eating something unknown and you like it, consider waiting until the next day to find out what it was.

Hey Byll - That must have been quite an experience for you… My roommate gave me a bit of plastic with that written on it, it came from the back of a juice box, believe it or not! The things you can get from juice boxes…

If you want to make God laugh, make plans!

If someone snarls at you in a store, remember, they may have a relative at home dying of cancer and can’t contain their anger.

Some of my favorites:

It does not matter how slowly you go so long as you do not stop (old Zen saying–particularly helpful for frustrated musicians).

Carpe diem (an oldie but goodie)

Never mix, never worry (for all us drinkers)

And my absolute mantra:

If you bring forth that which is within you,
What you bring forth will save you.
If you do not bring forth that which is within you,
What you do not bring forth will destroy you.
(Jesus, from the Gnostic texts, which means NOT the Bible!)

Geez, there are so many good ones.

“everybody happy?
wee! wee! wee! and to hell with the chappy who doesn’t agree.” – e.e. cummings

I dunno if there’s a saying that conveys quite this, but almost all the time, it requires no more effort to be nice to someone than to be nasty, plus you wind up feeling better after you’ve been nice.

“Don’t look back, someone might be gainin’ on ya.” – Satchel Paige

“If you don’t have any vices, you don’t have anything to give up when you get sick.” (paraphrase) – Mark Twain

– Jesus, the Sermon on the Mount

“Emptiness is form, form is emptiness…”
– the Buddha, the Heart Sutra
