Okay, peanut gallery away. I don’t EVEN know where to begin with this tidbit. It’s not what she is that bugs me, it’s her slippery way of describing it. I personally think she is doing the Clintonesque definition thing…
I don’t see anything slippery about it. There’s a slight hesitancy evident in using the “relationship with life” phrase prior to mentioning her partner of 7 years, but there are understandable reasons why people with very public profiles might choose to keep their private lives private.
But I applaud her for being honest and matter of fact when it comes down to it.
I’m not seeing Clinton-speak either unless you’re talking about her vague references to her personal wealth. Given her line of work, being broke or even normal middle income would be a real detriment.
I’m amused by her describing herself as a 55-year-old virgin.
I’m especially amused in the light of hearing lesbians complain that so few other lesbians want to do more than just cuddle. “Nobody wants to ****!” was the complaint I heard. So she may well be a 55 year old virgin. I’d hesitate to describe myself that way, especially if I was. But then I’m not a media person.
I had the same reaction about the phrase “55 yr old virgin”. I understand it may be technically correct but it sort of blurs the meaning of virgin. Just as Bill blurred lots of things when he said he never had sex “with that woman”. Maybe we need a Commission of learned philologists to redefine all these terms. I nominate Weeks.
Well, let’s just say that her standard for defining “virgin” may be more precise than for defining “marriage,” vis-a-vis involvement of a man. But as wint says, it conversely may blur the meaning, unless she only plays tennis with life or sumthin. Don’t want to get too political tho.
As for the revealed info that she is gay, let’s just quote the fossilized Weekender all together and say, “Duh!” Even my rarely used gaydar picked that up a looooong time ago. I didn’t need no steenkin Perezhilton.
I’ll tell you, I never watched her long enough to discern anything other than - she has an amazing grasp for the smack-you-in-the-face obvious, and people think she’s a genious.
“If you want to save money, you should take something from every paycheck and put it into a savings account”
Having a “middle [class] income” is not “normal” by any means. Most of the human population lives on much, much, less. Just thought I’d point that out.
Suze didn’t say that she was merely a 55 year-old virgin. She said “I am still a 55 year-old virgin.” This may have been a Freudian slip, but, to me, that means that she is allowing for the possibility that her status may change. That being said, I like Suze. No problem if she is lesbian as far as I am concerned. She has helped a lot of think people think through their financial situations. Maybe she needs to establish residence in a state that recognizes the legal benefits of a civil union between two women.
Shocking. Well, its always better not to prejudge, so have a cookie or somethin on me and keep up the good work.
PS. Nice catch, Doug! That is true.. Hey, for the right ma… oh, never mind.
PPSS. In the interest of professional disclosure, I must reveal that all of the Weekender’s taxes and scant financial assets are managed by a team of out women professionals in the Oakland area. Don’t know if its a sub-cultural phenom of such women doing these services, but it would certainly make sense for helping each other in the patriarchial traditional world of finance. I’ll take my tax gal over the Donald anyday when it comes to passing time and receiving advice. But, like Trump, Orman’s hair scares me.
Many moons ago I was a Vice President and Wealth Management Specialist for an International Private Bank. Basically I did planning for people with more money than God. There’s a surprising number of gay and lesbian folks in that profession.
I did strategy and planning for stuff like Family Foundations, Offshore Trusts, Private Trusts, Private Investment Management, Options Portfolios, Credit portfolios - all that kind of nonsense. I burned out on being in a universe where the highest values of my clients were greed, then consumption, then getting your ass kissed by people with less money than you.
However, if you wish to know the name of the best wealth management strategist for gay and lesbians, I know him - and his husband. If you have more than US$1 million in cash equivalent assets (which means you’ll have a quintuple buttload of other types of assets), he’ll talk to you. And he’ll give you great advice.
I’ve only caught bits and pieces of her show. One I do remember, she was talking to some woman who couldn’t afford to save any money, but spent 40-50 bucks a week at Starbucks for coffee.
Duh! Unfortunately there are all to many who need the smack in the face advice…and they are willing to pay her big bucks for it. Go figure.
Sometimes my friends call me stupid, because I don’t pay attention to those sorts of things. This one particular person I know was born with a male body and I didn’t know until I’d known her almost 2 years and she herself told me. She was rather astonished that I didn’t know because apparently it’s common knowledge, but I just don’t pay attention to those sorts of things. shrugs
A lot of social situations just pass right over my head, I think (both online and in real life). I’d never suspected that Suze Orman was a lesbian, but that doesn’t affect her financial advice (which I guess I’d take if I had money, lol).
