Thinking of leaving the forum but obviously can't Lol

The difficulty I’ve noticed has been two-fold. People get thrown off the board for obnoxious behaviour under their
real name and come back under an alias and carry on being obnoxious. Or people behave obnoxiously under their real name,
get confronted, leave in a snit, then return under an alias and carry on being obnoxious. This can make the board
a less pleasant place. Both cases
might be remedied by more moderator discretion.

However we have as good moderators as anyone could expect, and the general policy of allowing nicknames is reasonable–
the alternative being heavy-handed and a bit oppressive.
An internet board is going to be imperfect (like the rest of the world)and, personally, I don’t think it’s helpful
to leave because the board isn’t just what one wants. Perhaps people can be encouraged by Ronnie to identify themselves …or not.

Lol, just as much feisty discussion over on thesession.

Mr Gumby was enormously helpful to me in a previous life but I’m sure the advice would have been as sound under any name.

PS. I’ve yet to see name badges in the pub. The ears are usually enough to know if you’d like to stop and listen or sit down with someone

Hello Ronnie. It’s me you’re talking about — Charlie Gravel.

I understand where you’re coming from, and I agree. The only reason I’m ‘Crookedtune’ is because that was something I chose years ago, when I first dipped my toe in here. I’m not uncomfortable using my real name now, but I was then.

I’d be more than happy to put that guy to rest and create a new profile with my real name. In fact, I will.

Stick around. This is still a worthwhile place.

Cheers
Charlie

Ronnie, I get what you’re saying and I’m with you on this. I’ve always felt that anonymous posting on this forum was bullsh*t and often counter productive - people saying nagative things about makers and then running off to place an order with them not long after :really: Or having harsh words for a fellow forum member while hiding behind the cloak of anonymity…lame. And like you, I’ve had forum people recognize me by name in public, but of course I had no idea who they were when given name introductions were made, and it’s just odd.

None of this will change of course, and I rarely let it get under my skin any more (but then I spend far less time here than I used to), however I thought I’d let you know that there are others who feel similar to the way you do regarding this issue. By all means, take a break, lurk or avoid the board completely, nothing that important goes on here, and as you know, the music and most worthwhile human interactions take place out in the real world.

Enjoy yourself, and I hope to have a few tunes with you sometime.

Cheers,

Loren - My real name, since 1964, and surprisingly never banned from this forum. Although I imagine Dale seriously considered banning me on more than one occasion over the years

Hi again guys, many interesting views and I thank you for it. It isn’t about what I want ornot but on second thought I won’t leave the forum. But what has been said here by you all makes sense. Charles is an example of what Imean (I met him in Ballyvourney) but there are others. I just thought it would be nice if you have a discussion with some one who you are likely to meet later on in life to actually know who you are talking to. why should there be a problem Gordon? Its just a thought? Charles is the best example how we could have known eachother maybe earlier through this forum. Mr Gumby : obviously you don’t know me lol. Mark does and he would confirm if you had asked me I would stay, in fact, I could have easily stayed in Liscannor, I don’t work anymore so can stay as long as I like. I just don’t like big crowds of people but 'm back in Ennis in september. And yes this matters to me, people meeting eachother always matters to me. Besides: how did you know I was in Liscannor last week? I didn’t post that one here! So I probably do know you ! lol. PM each and one of you isn’t possible. And you must believe me Mark, (I even haven’t checked it now) that this was going on at the session.org too. I recall that I mentioned this earlier on this forum. But don’t worry, I am not frustrated, not mad, perfectly happy, I just thought it would be nice to know at least the ones who post so often. If not? Then we can always stop the session and shout : any chiff and fipples in this session? Again it was just a friendly, modest, humble thought. I’ve seen a lot heavier crap posted here. I think some of you are afraid to put you real names up here lol. Jim Stone’s remark makes a lot of sense that people use the fact that they are anonymus to check in over and over under other aliasses. Dang this post gets too long again lol I’d better leave it now …thanks for reacting.
P.S.
Thanks Loren, like I said its just something I thought of after a recent discussion here that was rather strange

Jees just ask a mod to change your name, at least we will know it was you who wrote a post in the past.

I didn’t post that one here!

You actually did. On the WCSS thread.

Jim Stone’s remark makes a lot of sense that people use the fact that they are anonymus to check in over and over under other aliasses.

I am not sure what Jim was saying there. I can tell you I have spent years on the forums under my own name. I took a break, for a year or two, and returned. As a fresh start I chose a different moniker. There has never been anything secretive about that though. Maybe Jim can give some examples of the malice that he has witnessed.

If someone posts a name, how do you really know it’s really their real name?

Unless you already know them personally, you don’t.

… it was just a friendly, modest, humble thought

…entitled ‘Thinking of leaving the forum’?

I know we had this topic before and maybe I’m going to get some flak about this post

Yep   :swear: :tantrum: :tomato: :waah:

You mean Michael Coleman (and his piano player) weren’t posting to thesession.org a few years ago?

You’re Cybil’s husband, Basil from Fawlty Towers, “boy o you nearly had me then”

Well, you got that one wrong anyway. See how confusing that stuff is?

I adopted this alias to post on another Internet venue that tends to get far more acrimonious than this one. Glad I did, because I’ve since run afoul of someone there, and I would rather they weren’t able to track me down. I chose to use it for C&F as well, because in the context of something I was discussing at the time, I felt it would be unfair not to make it clear that it was the same person in both venues. Not that important now, but it’s done.

I’ve shared my conventional name with others here. I doubt it will make a difference in their lives, because the chances of us crossing paths in person is pretty slim, given the geography. I don’t get around much.

In all my postings here, I try to remember that whatever the handle, there is a real person sitting in front of the computer screen, and I try to be at least as careful with what I type as what I speak in person.

Ronnie,

I hope you stick around and give an opinion once in a while. I appreciate your input here.

I started as “Akiba” on a whim; now I’m stuck with it, unless I want to go through channels to change (too much work for me…).

That’s why I put my full name in the signature section.

I dont’ mind the anonymity. It’s fun to have a nom de plum and be able to speak exactly what you think. In terms of civility, this board is way more tame than most forums (just look at Yahoo comments).

I did meet a person through the board; he’s now one of my best friends. And I’ve met and know a few others. I like finding out that so&so crazy moniker is actually this dude or that chick.

Cheers.

I’m afraid I don’t know the story - involved here as I am, I pretty much have my portion of trad music message boards. But C&F used to see a good number of posts from a certain michael_coleman. I figured it was either his real name, or it was a tribute to the legend. Or both. Either way, it never bothered me.

@ Ronnie:

Why don’t you just jot down the forum names of those whose path you cross and look them up later?
Arbo

I will stay on Jason, no harm done. Forums are for discussions of all sorts. Putting your name in the signature section is a good idea for those who want to. I guess you will be stuck with me for some future rants… thanks for the reminders Mark :tomato:
P.s.
Arbo I have already difficulties remembering the tunes that are played lol

Good to see you’re stayin on, Ronnie. I wasn’t saying there was a problem - thinking of leaving the forum in your subject line implied that there was. Since I don’t personally mind addressing a person by either a self-created title or their real name, if that’s what they prefer, I didn’t really understand what your posting was actually about. We come to the forum to talk or learn about flute-related issues, and the wealth of knowledge here is vast. But, beyond that, we’re all friends in cyberspace only - which is the point to an internet forum, anyway. For actual friendships, people mostly need to meet face to face and - through the forum - many of us have.

Loren - you’ve used your name for years and you and I have posted back and forth over the years, in agreement or not, using our real (first) names. But we’ve never met, so we don’t actually know each other. While I suspect we’d get along just fine in person, if you posted under the name O’Reilly’s Greyhound all these years, we’d have done the same, and we’d still get along just fine over a tune or two in a pub. So your first name (which is all I know, offhand, anyway) only makes it easier should I run into a flute player named Loren - I’d say, “hey, I know a Loren!” and there you’d be. In truth, there are many on the forum here I’d love to meet, personally, but until I do, I’ll know you all only under whatever title you choose to post.

I would just like to point out in passing that the seeming anonymity of my board nick is just an illusion; in the course of PMs I habitually sign off in the initial exchanges with at least my given name as a courtesy. As it happens, I notice most other members do the same whether beginning a correspondence, or responding in turn.

And another thought: Whatever “name” I use, it is not by that but by my posts that you shall know me.

I found this interesting. Thanks for reacting. Next thread

Agree with Mr Gumby, Gordon, Loren, Nano etc. We just discuss stuff to do with timber flutes and I don’t mind if people use their real names or an alias. Some interesting information surfaces now and then, but otherwise it’s just nice to see what other flute nerds are thinking about nothing more. See yes in Miltown
