I searched Denver in the City Guide and came up with nothing.
I’ll be there the 14th through 19th (arrive Thursday afternoon, leave Tuesday evening).
Any happenings?
I see there are a few Sunday sessions posted on The Session. The session at the Snug, posted by David Migoya, is close to where I’ll be staying but it looks like Sunday is also a football day according to the Snugs website… and I know Denver loves its football.
Non-music happenings are of interest too. The Molly Brown House and the newly expanded art musem are on the list already.
I’ve been to Denver several times but it’s the first my s.o. will be with me.
And does anybody what happened to that Ethiopian restaurant on Colfax?
I haven’t been in Denver for awhile, but there was a large
and busy folkmusic instrument store and I bet if you
search for it you’ll find it online. Or a library may have
the Denver Yellow Pages. Anyhow they may know
what’s happening musically.
Hello Aaron,
We got tons of stuff going on here. I go to the Sunday night session with Dave. It’s not at the Snug anymore but over at Scruffy Murphy’s at 2030 Larmier Street. There’s also a Monday night session at Fado at 1735 19th Street right by Coors field. Both start at around 7pm.
For other stuff to do around town the remodeled art museum sounds like a good choice. I need to make it down there myself. The lights at the Civic Center right across from the capital and by the museum will be going. Really quite a sight. For some local dining flavor I would try the Buckhorn Exchange. They’ve been serving up steaks, buffalo and elk for over 100 years. The walls are covered with stuffed animal heads and guns of all sorts.
The 16th Street mall and Larimer Square are always in full Holiday shopping mode around then. In years past there’s been an open air ice skating rink down there. You could even catch a show at the Denver Center for Performing Arts
Hope to see ya at the session.
Don
Also there’s Washington Park. Lovely place to go for a walk.
Also City Park. Denver is a really nice way from downtown too.
I was a seasonal laborer in Wash Park
for I think seven summers. I was working with
Chicanos most of them like Cheech. When
we were weeding flower beds I taught them
chain gang songs. Man it was fun!
Is skiing an option? I used to live around 9 hours from real ski country and felt that driving all night to have a crack at the Rockies seemed well worth it. Now I’m…well now is a different story. I should have skied more.
In any case, don’t miss those mountains and have a safe trip!
Thanks for the session update. My session chops are, well, they’re more like ground chuck and I will likely be travelling sans instrument but depending on events my family will be interested in hearing some music.
I forgot about the lights. Last time I was in Denver we saw them and they were very impressive.
I’ll be based largely around Capitol Hill. My sister is graduating from Metro that weekend so that will take up part of a day anyways.
Since it’s my s.o.'s first trip to Denver my sister and I are scheming to take her to Casa Bonita
I’m up about 1hr north of Denver. If you have transportation, give me a shout if you’d like to have a few tunes. I don’t make it down to Denver too much but there a great scene down there wit Don and Dave and such…
aaron, you’re always welcome to our session on Sunday nights.
I’ve been playing ice hockey this winter, so make it only every other week. Missed Mr. Chastain last Sunday.
I will be there on Dec. 3 (when you’re here, right?) for a few hours. Hockey begins at 10.
And if you need a flute, I have extras that I wouldn’t mind loaning out for the night. If you’d like to play a vintage one, just tell me: Rudall or Pratten. Or I have a keyless Olwell I’d let be used.
I’ll have a clearer itinerary in the coming weeks. The maternal unit has a growing list of things to do so a trip to Fort Collins may not fit but I’ll lobby for the session.
I’ll have to revive my miniscule repertoire. Is there a set list?
If I make it to a session it will be on the 17th. David, looks like you might be chasing the puck? We’re scouting for a good deal on tickets to the Avalanche-Oilers game on the 15th.
