I recall someone telling me about one such competition. There were all these hotshot drummers with busy tricks and ornaments and multi-pitched playing, very technically adept and flashy, but the one who won the contest did so by playing in a more simple and steady fashion.
I was looking at the website for the town where it is going to be held. It looks like a nice place. Here is something I cannot figure out. It is in the photo gallery and is a nature picture. Well, like, is this a turtle that has been smashed? I don’t think they would think that was a pretty thing, yet what else can this be? I seem to be having a hard time this week—everything seems so strange.
You know, I think that is tar brushed on the tree stump. I think this is sort of a strange nature photo. Now what is weird is that someone’s shoe is in this picture—okay, those mushrooms are very cool—oh, one of them looks like a little man, now that is strange, is that a special Irish mushroom? No wonder you are so big on slow airs! ----but how could a shoe suddenly be there?
Begging your pardon mam - that other
mushroom would be one of the wee folk.
The village of Milltown was plagued by magic
mushrooms and by the little people, so every
time they cut down a tree they painted pitch
on the stump to stop the mushrooms from
growing. The tar stopped most of the mushrooms,
but they are still plagued by the wee folk.
Many people cannot see the little people. But once
you are living in the village for a while you begin to
see them - ALL OVER THE PLACE!! Jeeees get em
off me!!!
Some would say it was the water in Milltown that had
the effect. The local well full of “uisce” (Irish for water)
but something strange about it? Some would say it was
touched by the wee folk, or even wee’ed by the small
folk!!! Anyway!!, it became “Uisce Beatha” the water of
life - also known as whiskey in Ireland. That water
seemed to affect what the people saw.
But let me tell you, its not the only strange thing about
Milltown.
Hint: (About the well in Milltown and the way the
water was being contaminated?) "Some would say it was the water in Milltown that had

It is, of course, a goat skin that has been spread on the grass to dry. Notice the shrinkage. This is just one of many steps on its way to becoming another bodhrán.
I congratulate Milltown and the bodhrán community for banding together and sticking up for each other. An event like this can only help to bring bodhrání together, and away from the many sessions world-wide that they would otherwise be infecting. There is a postive to side to everything.
I think I’ll have to go to Milltown to investigate all this for myself! The bodhran competition is sounding like the least odd thing taking place there! To be fair to poor Milltown, it does look like a beautiful place:
