The whistler's point of view during the step dance show...

Here was my view this past Sunday night, playing for step dancers down at The Field, San Diego’s finest Irish pub and restaurant:

(MPEG-4 video with AAC audio, about 2.5 megabytes)

You’ll need the latest version of Quicktime to view this file.

This is what makes all the practice worthwhile!

We play and they dance with all of us on on about a 10x10 foot stage that is raised up above the floor about 5 feet. You can get a sense of it when I pan the camera at the end of their group solo. Its amazing that the dancers don’t routinely fall off and kill themselves. :boggle:

If you’re ever in San Diego on a Sunday night, stop on by. Step dance show is from 5:30 - 7:00 PM, session starts at 7:00 PM.

Cheers,

Michael

The stepdancer teacher allowed the kids to perform to live music??
Ours will not…says that most musicians cannot keep the rhythm and beat precise enough for the dancers so CDs are used instead.

Having said that, at our concert, the dancers did break into spontaneous dancing to live music after their performances…it was so much fun to see the kids break out and do their own thing in hardshoes.

Questions from a beginner—

When you play for people step dancing, do you play reels?

Do you play as fast as people play in sessions without dancing? I would be interested to know what the metronome setting for a quarter note would be when playing for dancers. I realize this might not be possible to answer.

I am editing to say that I could undoubtedly get this from your video but I get confused about how to save them and play them. But I am sure I could figure it out, so that might answer my question.

When stepdancers dance to live music at feissiana (competitions), they will dance reels, jigs, hornpipes and treble jigs. The timing can vary depending on how advanced the dancer is.

The Session.org has some discussion on regulated speeds for dancers:

Here’s some great info on tempos when playing for dancers (courtesy of Marci Phelan, accordionist with Cobblestone)
