The Session appears to have been Hacked!

It looks like the Mustard Board is undergoing a DNS attack. All I can see is Korean postings ( at least it is han gul).
North Korea ???

Bob

It’s fine now. Maybe you’re the one being hacked?

TheSession looks fine here, too. Not sure what you mean by a “DNS attack”. Maybe DOS - Denial of Service?

As kkrell says, you might want to make sure you haven’t been DNS spoofed. Check your TCP/IP settings to verify that they are pointing to the right DNS (Domain Name Server[s]) for your ISP.

There was a hyper-active spam poster earlier, now removed.

I got the odd characters as well. Only in the Discussions section though, and only in the text of the comment. By the time I had looked at the tune I went there for it had gone back to normal.

I guess it would confuse a human spammer.

They caught Jeremy asleep. He’s on the case now!

 Bob

attacks/spam still ongoing:

The korean in the message bodies translates to “live casino” repeated over and over

I’m afraid Jeremy is going to have to moderate all new memberships until this Korean numpty goes away. :really:

Bob

Yep, 63 pages of nothing but Korean spam under Newest Discussions, as of a few minutes ago.

Yes, maybe. We found that manually approving all new users and their posts was the only thing that’s 100% effective. We still get some spam, but you guys never see it. - Mod

Sadly people still follow these links when they get posted to irrelevant forums, or else people wouldn’t bother doing it (or, usually of course, writing scripts that do it for them).

 to the mods for keeping c&f so clear of this garbage!

You’re welcome. We had a massive Chinese spam attack here a few years ago, which made us sit up and take notice. Now we have multiple anti-spam and anti-troll blocks in place (which I’m not going to describe here). But ultimately, it’s human intelligence that works best to foil the spambots. And that does take up a good part of our administrative time.

Actually, that doesn’t necessarily matter. These f***ers are looking for page hits for SEO (search engine optimization). So they pick boards like us that are fully indexed by the major search engines, and it doesn’t matter if board users click the links or not.

Fortunately, once it’s clear that nothing gets through, your site tends to disappear from the spam target lists that circulate out there. Unfortunately, that may take a few years. And there are always some who will try anyway. Attacks like this are cheap compared to the damage they do.
