The Placebo Tweak?

So I went over to the Costa Mesa Highland Games this last weekend. Had a great time, tried some real Haggis, bought some English Toffee for a nice person’s birthday, and heard a ton of great music.

This was also the location where I picked up my first whistle one year ago. So, operating purely on WhOA, and ignoring all the things I’ve heard here about them, I bought a Feadog.

It was soon clear that something had to be done. I consulted the Search button, and followed the advice about getting burrs out of the windway and dulling the blade slightly. I don’t have any blue tack handy. Anyway, the burr in the windway was extremely miniscule, and I made no discernible change to the blade, and I have good eyesight. In short, I really don’t think I did much to the whistle at all. But its condition has improved from Really Crummy to Somewhat Temperamental.

I think I may have just fooled myself into thinking I fixed the whistle, when in reality I am just getting used to its problems.

Bring it to the SF party on Saturday and let us have a go at it!

:smiling_imp: muahahahahahahahahaha :smiling_imp:

Depending on location, a miniscule burr can make no difference at all, or it can make a really amazing amount of difference. Inside the windway and also on the soundblade edge or on the underside of the soundblade, carefully removing any burrs or debris, even if very small, can have quite a noticeable effect of helping clean up how the whistle plays.

Best wishes,
Jerry

Actually, do what ever you want to the whistle, just don’t mess with the tube ~ Feadog tubes are nice with other heads on them!

Are you sure that wasn’t placebo hagis?

Jerry was right. I found another really tiny burr under the blade, which made a difference. It was real haggis, not the cheap imitations that they so often bring around here. Norcal, I can’t make it up there after all.

I also just discovered that the blasted thing’s 30 cents sharp of A440. Sigh.

I was very cautious of this issue when I tweaked my Sindt.
I needed to experience four seasons and many conditions in Japan before I made sure whether my tweaking(or adjustment or whatever) was real success.

What if I dont like the tweaked sound when my Sindt was left uncleaned for about a month(this is important because I am so lazy)? What if I dont like the sound when it was cleaned completely? What if I feel the 3rd octave B getting worse(e on high d)?What if I dont like the sound when its cold or when its hot? What if I feel the tweaked Sindt worse than original Sindt on any condition?Everything as possible was necessarily experienced and taken into consideration.

Well, after all, these effort was really worthy but I was bit fatigued with this process. It took great amount of time to tweak a single high-end whistle while I even am sure of my consistent taste for the sound which I never am bored/tired of until my body says ‘stop’.
