The Pipe Makers

Do any of the pipemakers use the same design?? Example If I buy a chanter from ______??? and one from _______??? they will have the same bore possibly even made from the same reamer specs???

Not likely. Some may start off by copying the specs of an older chanter, but each pipemaker ends up making their own reamers according to their own tastes and experience, so there are some general areas that are the same, but a lot of customizations, too. This provides us with a lot of choice as to the sound we prefer, but it also means that you really have to spend a lot of time trying to hear sets from different makers.

sharpening a reamer can change it’s dimensions slightly…

Ive been taking x-rays at the local animal hospital of all my different pipes, Uilleann, GHB, and a Murray flute… It pretty interesting

I only hope you haven’t gotten confused and started squeezing the poor sick and injured little animals under your left arm!!

Who’s paying for the radiograph film? :stuck_out_tongue:

I guess the cost gets kicked back to the animal hospital, my good friend does them for me 4 free…

I have often been tempted to bring my set into to work, or maybe just the chanter, and take a radiograph of it. Problem is, I’d get my ass fired if I did.

You could probably get a local animal hospital to do it. If you paid them…

I work in a local animal hospital as a veterinary tecnician, and though my boss is a nice fella, I don’t think he’d appreciate me using his resources for my own personal fun… and paying him is kind of costly. It is possible that I could bring the set into St. Petersburg college and have one of the students do it there as a ‘contrast’ study, but it is a 175 mile round trip (which I used to drive), and I do not perticularly relish the drive. Perhaps when I begin the next fall semester I’ll give it a go.

I cant figure out how to post images other that links

Seth, I’ve posted a couple of links to help out, also, ibnstructions per Gary Kelly about posting photos from other sites. Go back to the thread about small pipes.

Hey Joseph,:poke:
You need to be innovative.
Strap your chanter on to the next sick aninimal in for x-rays and pretend it’s a splint.
Problem solved.
Joseph (the UK one). :adminok:

 That’s an idea Joseph. I wonder, if I can tape it to a dog… in such a way as to develop looking like the chanter was lodged up his as… uh, maybe not.

Here is one of the X-rays
