edit–I just checked amazon and saw that they apparently did. I loved Fiona Apple’s first two albums. I’d buy this one too but sadly I don’t have a dime to spare.

I was surprised to see this going for such a low price on Amazon. Never heard of her. Found some clips on MSN. We definitely do not share the same tastes in music.

Surely. I went to Amazon to find the name of the album (curiously unmentioned in the original post) which is called Extraordinay Machine. I then went to Google and entered:

The story behind this album is pretty interesting. The record company
didn’t want to release it because it wasn’t commercial enough, or
some such. Though it couldn’t be bought, electronic versions ended
up on the Internet. A grassroots campaign was started. Fans actually
picketed the record label’s building in NYC.

Although now it’s starting to sound like Fiona herself wasn’t entirely happy with the first version.

I located the bootleg version, downloaded it and burned it to CD. Listened to about half of it on the way to work this morning. It will be awhile before I can figure out which is my favorite.

Can you comment on what’s different? Is it production values?
Or did she go back and rerecord everything, like Lisa Loeb did (for
different reasons) between “Cake & Pie” and “Hello, Lisa”?
