The nature of Push

Edit - this crossed with Terry’s last post

Audacity’s spectrum time-plot is also handy for a recording of playing with a metronome. The clockwork variety produces a very narrow vertical bar for each tick. Handy for ‘feedback’ at my level, but maybe also for timing measurements if an experienced player could imitate a particular rhythmic style.

Kind of relevant to Cork’s comment: I recently used it to see what I was doing with a slip jig. Found that I was on time with the ‘one’ but consistantly slightly ahead on the other two beats. I checked the recording of a session that I learned it from - looks like thats how they played it.

And you could also do a study of 1960’s foot tapping - see the spectrum.

haha. my favorite part of the old videos is watching the audience.

@Terry,

The French have a great saying in regard to music (insert fact here, that my French is so bad that I do not attempt to use an exact quote (perhaps as, j’ne se qua)), which roughly translated says, " I don’t know what." Moreover, this saying hits the nail right on the head, in that “mechanical” music is dead, and that it takes a certain “I don’t know what” for music to come alive.

Oh, the battle between my logical, engineering self, and my musical self goes on and on, and on.

Then again, perhaps there could be a reason as to why so many mathematicians, physicists, scientists and engineers could include music in their daily lives, but perhaps that could be the topic of yet another thread. :wink:

Or how much time Tansey spent on those particular notes that particular performance. Probably is a median, for him, but I’m not sure you’d learn much beyond that. Regional style medians probably vary, too, but I think you’d find variance between same-regional players as well, though not so much as between different regional players…
What are we trying to find out here again?

I ask again, “How many beans make five?” It wasn’t entirely a flippant trot-out of an old saw, even if it did lead to off-topic levity.

i surrendered a long time ago… you’re puns pushed mine out of the way a long time ago. was this a calculated effort?

Nah, not calculated. They’re like ITM ornamentation (pace another current thread) - they just pop out (like peas from a pod!!!).

If you surrender, are you saying you’ve bean had?

Addition: Or do you think I’ve bean stalking you, Jack? this punning lark grows on you! I’ll be telling fairy tales yet! (NO groaning back there in the one-and nines!) All part of life’s rich pantomime…

Terry, I think Henrik Norbeck has done something relating to this for his abc mus programme. Personally I’ve never been able to quite grasp what, despite his explanations, but he has got some kind of formula going to give (adjustable) swing to difference dance types in his abc player, you might want to get in touch with him.
