I’d like to play an “hybrid”, but don’t know if it’d be fine to play a version just like that from TheSession, but removing the last part (|:BAGF EFGA|B2GB A2GA|BAGF EFGA|BcdB AFDF:|)
What’s the common in sessions?
By the way, if you have a recorded version from your own, I’d be very happy to hearing it.
If you read the very first comment at thesession, you’ll see that it’s really a three part tune, and the transcriber has just listed two possible ways of playing the last part. I’d add that both of the 3rd part variations sound okay when played together.
I think Peter Horan plays the third part the same way – it doesn’t correspond to either of the third parts given on thesession, but is a sort of blend of them. (Unfortunately, I have to say think, because my old digital recorder failed me on the day I asked him to play the tune solo for me.)
I’d be interested in hearing Clancy and Killoran together, too!
Yep. you are really just running into the delights of the aural tradition - lots of variants to a tune. You actually have to select/develop your own version, wherever you source it from. Even if you chose a single source (written or recorded), your interpretation will change with time, both with you “naturally” putting your own feel to it (ornamants, articulation, rhythmic emphases, melodic variation) and influenced more or less consciously by other renditions you hear as time passes, from which you may deliberately select a variation, ornament or nuance, or which may simply subconsciously alter your “mind’s ear’s” internally “recorded” version from which you play/imagine the particular tune. Some tunes have more variants and are susceptible of more varied approaches than others: this one is a very variable one!
BTW, check it out also under the title The Hare in the Heather, by which Matt Molloy recorded it (Heathery Breeze album) and under which it appears in Ceol Rince na h’Eireann Vol I (#198) (which happens to be the version I first learned) where it was sourced from piper Matt Tiernan (Maitiu Mac Tighearnain). See The Fiddler’s Companion entry for The Morning Dew 1 as well.
Here, FWIW is a rendition on low whistle I’ve rattled off to try to help - first time through fairly plain and slow, then a couple of times at a reel speed with some variation (all based on the CRE I notation, though not exactly as written). Hope it helps. The Hare in the Heather (The Morning Dew).
Here are the ABC and dots of the basis of what I play, slightly adapted from the CRE I notation:
T: The Hare in the Heather
T: (The Morning Dew)
C: Traditional
O: Ireland
R: Reel
M: C|
L: 1/8
S: CRE I #198
Z: Jem Hammond 23:3:2008
K: E Dorian

My version is very close to Willie Clancy’s, the 3rd part is exactly how I’ve always played it.
I’ve never liked the way that people run down and up the scale in the 3rd part- it just doesn’t seem “whistley” but more like an accordion would play it.
