Great title huh?
Any way, I recently decided I am interested in a low D whistle. I know that it’s the lowest, and therefore, the hardest, but I want it! Three problems:
I don’t know which to get since I heard so much good things about so many whistles. I saw a low D played by Mr. Becker of Irish Cream, and I thought it was a Shaw, but now I’m not sure. I realy do not know what to get.
I am willing to invest an amazing amount of money: about 50$, and I want to pay less than that.
Customs in Israel, so it apears, seem to not allow most low whistles in israel claiming that they are actually parts of firearms I want to make “using simple household appliances”.
I would very much like to get some answers on problem n. 1 and prices(mostly your opinions on low whistles in D).
thanks very much,
yotam,
Israel.
Actually, Low D is not the lowest whistle. I know of at least one mfg that produces a Low C and Low Bb.
Yes, there are a surprisingly large number of mfg’s that produce the Low D whistle. Most will be quite a bit above your $50 price ceiling though. If you have the tools at hand and considering the political situation, making one yourself may be the way to go. There was a thread here recently that discussed this matter.
The low Bb is harder than low D. Pipers grip is the only way I can play it,
and even then only for about three tunes without a break, whereas I can play the low D for a at least an hour without a break.
Not even a sip of liquid refreshment.
As to the make, it depends what you want it for.
Quiet playing by yourself Dixon - cheap in price, nice tone, easy to play.
Sessions or letting yer neighbours know you’ve got a low whistle
Alba, Kerry Pro, Chieftain, Overton - there are others - so I’m told But they’re all more than you said.
Really depends on yer pocket. The Dixon is plastic, so shouldn’t be confused with armaments.
Or
Paste “make low D whistle” into google.com and you’ll find instructions to make yer own. Really cheap
below is a link to the absolute cheapest low D I found while looking on the internet. i don’t have one, so i can’t say anything about their quality or their sound, but the price is definitely low.
you didn’t say whether you wanted a metal or plastic whistle, but i agree with easily_deluded_fool that plastic might be less likely to be viewed as a weapon.
I agree that the Dixon is a good low D at about 75
and that, as it’s PVC, customs might let it in.
Try on the internet The Whistle Shop; also emailing
TWS for info about low Ds in your price range
is a good idea. Thom is a swell fellow and has
various sales on low Ds.
