I heard lunasa play and well love it, I found the music on the session, but at the bottom it has a varition, could that be played while the other part is being played? and if it is where would be played in? i currently have no one to try it with so I figured I’d ask all you very smart people
It’s a variation Lunasa plays in their version…you could listen to that to find out where they play it. It’s definitely not played at the same time as the other. I haven’t listened to that CD for a long time, but I’m thinking they use it as a variation of the B part (could definitely be wrong, however). (If no one answers before I get home, I’ll listen to it and let you know how they use it.)
You wouldn’t play the variation at same time as the tune, no.
(Nor would one play the tune or the variation as written every time. You should find a recording of the tune and listen to it closely enough to discern the differences between the times they play the tune. Just a thought.)
Bloomfield speaks wisely, as usual, listen to a recording. There are videos on YouTube of Lunasa playing “The Last Pint”, oh and on the Kerrywistles site too. Lunasa have morphed the playing of this tune over the years too. I guess the personnel have changed a bit since the studio recording as well. Having heard it in concert a few times, there is always something new but subtle to hear.
Pierre Bensusan, the stellar DADGAD guitar player, authored the tune. Look around YouTube and you will likely find a few versions by him as well. The variation at the end of Lunasa’s version is certainly based on Bensusan’s own improvisations at the end of the tune.
The “variation” listed on session.org is actually a third part–Lunasa plays a long version of this tune, playing the A and B parts repeated as usual, then adding the third part, then going back to A, B, C.
There’s actually a fourth part to the version Lunasa plays as well, which i dont’ think is in the Session.org notes, that i had to kinda figure out. I guess it’s not a fourth part, really, just an alternate ending to the variation. I’m not sure i have it one hundred percent, as the recorded version is in a different key than the Session listed version.
Thanks everyone
I found the song again and listened to it, and yes you are all right, I think that with all the whistles it sounded like they were playing different things, it helped actually watching them too instead of just listening to it
