The Hoity-Toity Confessional

If you don’t read the Traditional Stringed Instrument Forum, you may have missed out on what precipitated this thread.

hoi·ty-toi·ty [hoi-tee-toi-tee]
adjective

  1. assuming airs; pretentious; haughty.
  2. giddy; flighty.

Please feel free to confess your most recent transgression. I’ll be offerring penance.

I actually told someone to “talk to the hand”, recently. I’d never done that before. It’s a powerful thing. You shoulda seen his eyes bug out. :smiling_imp:

Does that count? It’s haughty, I’d say.

I have my own thank you.

3 Danny Boys and a She Moved Through the Fair. Next.

Mercy is free for the asking. Next.

Well, I suppose it’s high time I finally learned the second one, anyway.

Mercy? Hah! The Wisconsin trinity of Badgers, Packers, and Brewers show no mercy!

Oh no…you didn’t. Actually, I don’t even know what that means.

I’m trying to think of something. Usually I’m so embarrassed about possibly being perceived as privileged or something that I fall all over myself in utter dorkiness as a hedge.

But here, I did do this:
In April we (my mom, my husband, me) got stuck in the Salt Lake City airport for 6 extra hours because of a delayed flight. We had to find somewhere comfy to retreat. I went and discovered that the Delta Sky Lounge would grant us admission because my Mom had an AmEx Platinum card which she’d had for years (my late dad must’ve gotten it) and she had no clue what it was good for. But it was good for getting us into the Sky Lounge where they had plenty of lounge chairs, snacks, wifi, nice bathrooms, luggage storage, and cookies. That was worth a few Danny Boys…I’ll take what’s coming to me.

It was big during the 90s, so it took me this long. I’ve made it retro-chic offensive.

It’s kin to the Greek moutza; the hand is similarly extended at the person you insult but the whole palm is more the dominant part and the fingers may be spread or closed depending on your whim. The gesture often occludes the insulted’s face from the insulter’s view - sort of like gesturing “stop” - and then you say “talk to the hand” (…“because I ain’t listenin’” is the implied continuing sentiment). As you can see, it’s very rude.

Of course I only did it for the shock value of rude humor, and I got huge laughs precisely because no one expected it of me, but I also did it because I was already in deep conversation with someone else and yer man was being his usual self as an irritating, importuning, interrupting sonovab*tch and I’d finally reached the end of my tether with him. And boy, did it work. I don’t think I’ll ever do it again, though; it’s a pretty cheap way to go and I like to think better of myself than that.

A penance most fitting of world travelers who take advantage of first class accomodations available only to the uppercrust. Memorize “My Heart Will Go On (Theme from The Titanic)” Here’s a link to get you started. Next. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=saalGKY7ifU

Someone thinks they’re all that and a bag of chips.

(This was a popular saying about the same time. A person needed loose neck vertebrae to say that while they wagged their finger.)

Dude, I am the bag o’ chips.

Now what’s my penance?

Excellent. I already did that when the movie was out and girls of my daughters’ age played that incessantly. I remember driving a carpool full of 12 year olds back from a birthday party with that on. You may have no idea how much dramatic ham 12 year old females can inject into their renditions. Got off easy that time.

You are dill pickled flavored chips. Ha Ha.

Why, then…eat me. :smiling_imp:

Have you noticed I have a defiant streak?

a defiantly streaking bag o’ chips…

I am so glad I’m not in marketing

I am too hoity-toity to participate in this thread.

There is only one penance that can equal both your hoity-toity and haughty attitude. You are doomed to wander the earth playing the bagpipes in full regalia with a run in your sock.

Shan’t. And you can’t make me. :smiling_imp:

There are a lot of assumptions in there. Full regalia? What regalia? Powwow regalia? (I have that…) Military regalia? Ain’t got that… Highland regalia? Mmmm, no. I don’t even have the bagpipes. Would dulcimer do? It has a kind of drone. Always fancied the uillean pipes, but I’m too long in the tooth and too scared of my wife to start that now.

Anyway, shan’t.

But I’m pretty sure he said you’re doomed to. So we’ll see.
