Calling Galactic Centre. Calling Galactic Centre. Come in, Galactic Centre. This is Sagittarius, eh? ![]()

Caroluna, I take it from your reaction that you don’t know that the most recent astronomical evidence seems to indicate that all galaxies have a black hole at the center.
(I have been watching The Universe on TV. Some eye opening stuff.)
Yes I knew about it, but it still makes me go
!!!
I heard about it on NOVA – “Monster of the Milky Way”
watch it online here
NOVA | Monster of the Milky Way | Watch the Program | PBS
it talks about how new technology called “adaptive optics” allowed astronomers to see stars at the center of the galaxy, and see them so clearly that their movements could be detected. Turns out, there’s a cluster of stars that are moving at huge rates of speed, making hairpin turns around…nothing… ![]()
I’m old enough to remember when the idea of black holes seemed very far-fetched, the way wormholes seem now-- a plot device for science fiction. It blows me away that the evidence is so clear-cut, and that it seems so likely that one is at the center of nearly every galaxy…like some sort of cosmic bellybutton ![]()

Yup, just sittin’ there waiting to eat up the whole danged galaxy, and any curious critters that come snooping around. Wonder if black holes burp after eating?
Yes, but only inwards.
