How do the pipers in Ireland play the 3rd section of this tune, the “Flogging Reel”?
In the 3rd & 4th measures of the 3rd sec., the rest of my band wants to do an F’nat and I like the way the pipes bark out the F#. Lifting off the knee doesn’t quite tune in to them. The rest of the tune seems like such a naturally great pipe tune, I’m wondering if the fiddlers are the ones who originally dropped it to an F’nat.
I do an ACA closed triplet followed by a second octave F# and back down to A… Learned it from someone who learned it from the Walsh book of pipe-friendly tunes…

Like Eskin says, F#. I use ACA trip., then quaver f# and d, though I do use F nat off the knee as you can’t bend the other plays to it(You can try starting off on e, slowly lift the chanter whilst playing the tune,doing ACA trips or just taps on A through to F# and that really can raise eyebrows. I cran a ghost d in upper octave and pop on the bflat!
seriously the fnat fiddle trick sounds lovely with the fsharp on the pipes. (mmmmmm)
I do play a tight triplet run up from b csharp d
and pop the g then second phrase pop the fsharp thrice. POPTASTIC!
AlanB…guess what? Your reed plays a nice Fnat off the knee. I was playing the Flogging Reel with the band, using your reed, and hitting the Fnat right along with the fiddler, then lowering the chanter to end up on the #. Nice!
