That’s a wonderful photograph. Note how (relatively) close the guys appear to the launch, and how flimsy the gantry is..and that rickety little building in the foreground. My, things have changed a bit at the Cape, haven’t they.

I like the 4x5 Speed Graphic with the sideways flash bulb.
That is a lovely photo. A photograph of the photographers. Odd to think I was a baby then, so those fellows were in the generation of my parents or grandparents. I think since I know nothing about cameras or space ships the picture does not look very dated to me. I was suprised by the date.
terrific photo. Man, black and white sure makes
lovely pictures
Cool. I remember when lauch day was a big deal. Sometimes we’d watch it in school.
The prototype takes off from Peenemunde –

That is a “liberated” V2 with a WAC Corporal sounding rocket as the second stage. That combination reached the greatest altitude and speed for an artificial object up to that time.
I must be getting close to fifty…
Dennys pic combined with Scotties post brought this wonderful verse to mind.
“We come on the ship they call the Mayflower
We come on the ship that sailed the moon
We come in the a-ge’s most uncertain hours
and sing an American tune
Oh, and it’s alright, it’s alright, it’s alright
You can’t be forever blessed
Still, tomorrow’s going to be another working day
And I’m trying to get some rest
That’s all I’m trying to get some rest”
Paul Simon.

WOW!! Good catch - forgot about that 2nd stage. Had to google the origins to remind what it was
You can tell its an early shot- every one seems to be up close and personal. Don’t think the range saftery officer today would allow that anymore.
They wouldn’t let you that close to set off some of the larger model rockets today.
AIN’T THAT THE TRUTH
I found this looking for V-2 images.
