The Feels of the Flute

After a long of day of teaching today, I came home eager to get in some playing instead of being a couch potato - which is what I really felt like doing. I got into a great run of playing and after about two and a half hours took a break. My lips, however, were not ready to “break” but had the feel of wanting to play more. They were getting blubbery so I stopped but the feeling in my lips, the vibrations, were haunting. I began recalling the feeling in my right hand fingers as the air currents vibrated under them. WOW! But why only the right hand? Dunno. Then the groove in my chin felt lonely for the feel of the flute filling it. Ever notice that? Some days, when I’m not too relaxed, it hurts a bit there, but, today, longing for the flute to return. I recalled oiling the flutes yesterday and the feeling of rolling them around in my hands while oiling the outside . . .

“Yo, Will”, I said to me, “Your going bats!” Am I alone in these flute feelings? Or is it Freudian?

I love my flute!!! – today, anyway.

No your not alone. I also played for a long time abut 3 and a half hours also. My lips couldn’t take it any more so I went to whistle but after playing my F Flute for most of that time and a few tunes on the Fife maybe one or two on the D I was kind of bored with playing but after I was done (that was actually just a few minutes ago) I felt the urge to play again. Now listening to Lunasa the urge is growing.

Oh my! No, you’re not alone at all. Not in the least.

I especially like the tucked-up-under-the-lip warmth of the wood. It’s as if your chin had been designed that way just for the flute and the flute for you.

My pupils dilate when I hold my flute, I’m sure.

Yum.

ahhhhh no you are not alone.
and for scientific provenance how about, that your lips are the most sensitive part of your body as they have lots of nerves so , when the lips or around your lips are stimulated, your body gets the same reaction as when you would have been kissing!

now that makes sense, doesn’t it! fluteplaying is a lot like kissing  sometimes even more than that…

Nw wonder when I swab out a wooden instrument I put it up to my face or lips to see if it is wet.

Years ago, I seem to remember the classical flute player Hepzibah Menuhin (sp?) - conductor Yehudi’s sister - remarking in a very genteel and proper fashion that flute players made the best lovers. I wish I could find the exact quote. It was an interview I saw on PBS, so much of the innuendo may have come from her body language rather than the exact words – but her meaning was unmistakeable!

I will agree with that Kate, we flute players are by far the best lovers…the others will agree in this self assessment as well…no doubt…
