The Digital Divide and the $100 Laptop

The MIT Media Lab is launching a new program to develop a $100 laptop—a technology that could revolutionize how we educate the world’s children. The idea was announced by Nicholas Negroponte, Lab chairman and co-founder, at the World Economic Forum at Davos, Switzerland in January 2005.

One downside, is that it may mean the end of paper school books for many children because the $100 will often come out of the book budget.

The upside boggles the mind. Steven Jobs, Apple co-founder, used the phrase, “change the world.” If done right, or even if done poorly, this project has that potential.
