The Dancing and the Dreaming

We watched “How to Tame Your Dragon 2” over Thanksgiving with the grandkids. Great movie. I thought the tune “The Dancing and the Dreaming” would sound good on the whistle, so I started learning it by ear from the recording by The Hound + The Fox. I getting it down pretty well but my question is: what key is it in? It sounds right when played using G fingering on a D whistle but the tune seems to resolve to either G, E or maybe C depending on which part you’re in. There might be a key change about half way thru but even before that the tune seems to move around. I’m not much of a music theorist and may have this all wrong. Assistance appreciated.

Hey there, tuskface,

It starts in the key of C Major. So use D fingering on a C whistle. And it stays there until towards the end, when (as you said) there’s a modulation (key change) - up a whole step to D Major. So quick-swap your whistle to a D whistle but keep using the same D fingering.

Alternately, if you have a G whistle around, you could start with G fingering (concert C Major), then just change fingerings to A fingering (concert D Major) at the key change. No swapping whistles necessary.

Hope that makes sense.

Thanks, MT. That makes sense. Noodling thru it, there are few, if any, F# in the C major part which is why G major worked but didn’t resolve where I thought it would.
