The Composer Beck

Any one know any of his music?

I like “When I Followed a Lass” and “Fain Would I have Her” (1786) by Beck.

Any information, full name, other works, would be much appreciated.

Johenn Sebestien Beck?

Ah’ll](http://youtube.com/watch?v=reuK2msTzec%22%3EAh%27ll) be Beck.

HMMMM :really:

The only ‘Beck’ I have on the short list is:

Conrad Beck (b. Schaffhausen, Switzerland 16 June 1901) pupil of Ibert, Honneger, Rousell, Boulanger. Collector/Arr. Sw folksongs; Director Basel radio 1938-66. 7 Symphonies; cantatas, oratorios, Piano Concerto, choral works, songs:
in other words, your average 20th c. composer.

YOUR 'Beck ’ however,

Im intrigued. Let me dig… :sunglasses:

Well, for the sake of clarity, here is the ABC for “When I Followed a Lass”

It should work at the ABC Convert-A-Matic site.
Thanks again for looking.

I can’t help but think this sounds an awful lot like The South Wind, which is a much pleasanter, more rounded tune, IMHO.

well after looking at the real music,
the converter says he only transcribed it..
it dosent remind me particulartly of ‘South Wind’..
looks like 1000’s of other things in Barnes…I’ll get into Grove today + get back.

That could be an error of mine. I just put Z:Beck when I was doing the ABC thing (How do you list who the composer is?). It was in MelBays Fun with the fife I think listed as “Beck (1786)” although they also listed “American Veteran Fifer (1905)” for some tunes, so I guess that I was assuming that Beck was the person that wrote it.

Franz Ignatz Beck (b. Mannheim 1734 d.Bordeaux 1809) Composer, conductor Violinist, organist, pupil of Stamitz.

Frederick Beck (b. Wurtemberg 1738 - d.London 1798).
Piano maker, German trained, sets up shop in London approx 1756
Not known to have composed.

Anthony Beck ( b England ?, d. Norwich 1674.) Composer. Lay Clerk, Norwich Cathedral 1639, fired 1642. Resumed position 1663. Notable composer of Sacred anthems, included in partbooks, and in the volume Restoration Cathedral Music 1660-1714.

Inconclusive. Although it is a strong possibillity each man could have written / transcribed the piece, there is no hard evidence.
From what I can access, the song title is not listed in their output.
Another individual who may shed stronger light might be Matt Seattle, who has done considerable research into period folk tunes.
Either way, I’m working the tune into my uilleann sets at the earliest opprotunity!

It seems like it may have been just transcribed by Beck.

It shows up in Fiddler’s Companion, but slightly different. and more importantly before the Beck reference.

I just saw Beck play on the tele, not the Beck you are looking for however, unless he also sits a half dozen guys at a banquet table and has them drum on plates and wine glasses while he plays guitar.

it wouldnt hurt to contact Peter Barnes, either. PM for his email

I might do that once I know enough to ask the right question.

Right now I am stuck wondering what the history of “When I Followed a Lass” is, what book/publication someone named Beck could have transcribed it into, where one can find Aird, Vol. II (1782) to see if it has any notes on the tune.

Heck, all I wanted to do is see if the guy had any other works because I liked what I saw.

I think Henry Beck is the person I am looking for and ["Henry Beck's Flute Book" (1786)](http://www.colonialdancing.org/Easmes/TOC/St016434.htm)is what I am looking for. Now to see if there is an electronic copy floating around...

The youtube videos seemed to be a dead end.

it’s all about the chase…thrilling!

I hate to say it, but I probably wouldn’t have followed up on your leads because I learned more looking for the information. The less well known the information, the more I dig. So I know what you are saying.

I might throw in the towel though and ask Peter Barnes or Matt Seattle if they know how to track down “Henry Beck’s Flute Book”. Hopefully without having to go through an inter-library loan with the library of congress.
