I’ve never liked the tune, The Butterfly,
but this rendition is likeable. Find myself
learning the tune from this video.
From Doc Jones’ irishflutestore, the
group Butterdogs, a Japanese ITM
group. Note the aebi 6 key.
Am that a B flat he be playin? He does play it with a good flow usually I find the tune to playground song like.
He barely took breaths on that high D tune. ![]()
D flute, just looks a bit stretched out in the video.
Nicely playful, IMO, and the video looks very good.
I love this interesting tune.
I like it. I usually do a lot more sliding and a lot less rolling, but his version bounces along nicely. Nice recording, too.
good player. dig that lowwww G. where’s the rhythm section? ![]()
If you want to hear an interesting version of the “Butterfly”, look out for the version played by “Flairck”, from the Netherlands. Anyone else heard them ?
Hm yes. They actually performed that first on television for some aniversary do or other for Dutch Queen Juliana during the late 70s and presented it as a composition for the occasion, called ‘De Vlinder’ which is Dutch for The Butterfly. The woman of the house may stil have some of their lps stashed away here, if I go looking for them.
Peter, I am pretty sure this tune composed by Tommy Potts. He was never in the band Flairck.
Potts composed only one part and took the other two from different tunes. I am aware of that.
I was alos aware of that when Flairck was on television, I learned the tune in 1975, off the Bothy Band record.
Hence the remark above.
That makes much more sense.
Tommy Potts with “Flairck” - now there’s a thought ! ![]()
A lot of people at the time thought the last name of their fiddleplayer ‘Houtzager’ terribly ironic, for a fiddleplayer

It’s one of my favourite tunes of all time. Works well played slowly, with lots of slides, Martin Hayes style. I love the implied C6 chord in the second part, and it sounds great if your guitarist plays C6 pretty much through the whole of the second part. The third part sounds good with a syncopated first couple of beats.
I guess you get out of a tune what you want!
yes, the B part on the Guitar is really nice, the Am Bm C and D cords are my favorite.
i like the Bothy band recording of it as well.
Yes, plenty of people like it, which is one reason why it’s
often recorded. I guess. Why don’t I like it?
I hate butterflies. That’s why.
me too !! especially the nice cheery colorful ones, but that’s me, i hate Christmas, ahh yes, and birth days and little kids, and all the Major cords, i only read the obituaries in the papers ![]()
A long time ago, when the KKK was organizing in
New Mexico, its slogan was ‘We’re 100% American.’
A shopkeeper put a sign in his window:
‘I’m 200% American.’
Asked why he explained: ‘The KKK is 100% American.
They hate Jews,
Negroes, and Catholics. I’m 200% American.
I hate everybody!’
I’m like that guy except I also hate butterflies.

Does that make you 250% American?
