The Bloody Hand Low F, Eb, D & C whistle set public offering

Whistlers and Whistlerettes:

The Bloody Hand has been exploring plans for a LOW F, Eb, D & C interchangeable whistle set. The set makes use of the highly respected Susato Kildare Low D production mouthpiece and four self-made interchangeable 3/4" copper plumbing pipe bodies. Whistle body lengths, hole locations and hole dimensions have not been determined yet.

I was thinking we could make the development of the plans a community message board project. Individual members could take on the task of determining body lengths, hole locations and dimensions. These “posting” would form the basis for the new Bloody Hand Low Whistle Set plans. I would be happy to compile and edit the final version with proper credit going to contributing members. Dale has graciously agreed that Chiff & Fipple would host the new Bloody Hand Low Whistle Set plans on the web site.

Pre-publication tidbit: The highly respected mouthpiece requires no modification and maintains the playability and integrity of the production 2-piece Susato Kildare wide bore cylindrical Low D whistle.

Schedule L fits nicely while schedule M produces mild interior scrapes. Be sure and deburr any copper pipe before insertion or it will lead to o-ring damage on the Susato whistle body.

Elderly Music lists the Susato Low D whistle for a mere $45.85.

Whistlerettes . . .

Sounds like chewing gum used to kick the WhOA habit.

I hear it comes in a patch now too!

The main thing is that where you couple the mouthpiece, it has to be smooth without sharp edges. Sharp edges in the bore kills power, deburr it well.

Once you come up with your first whistle and a certain mouthpiece, you can subtract the “mouthpiece” constant from the tube length calculations for other keys.
You can stretch a piece of 3/4" PVC across an octave from 220 Hz to 440 Hz.

Type ‘M’ copper tubing for the tonebody is a lot nicer than type ‘L’ because type ‘M’ is lighter weight.

Today’s tinkering produced a low C tone hole frequency of 260 and a much sharper second octave frequency at 545, using 3/4" type M copper plumbing pipe. Overall fipple-center to bore-end length comes in at 24 9/16 inches.

Very low wind requirements and almost too quiet.

Estimated finger hole locations as measured from the bore-end:

(fipple)
12 9/16
10 6/8
9
7 3/16
6
3 10/16
(bore)
