the biggest impact on your playing?

I know that some of you have attended many workshops/events such as Boxwood, Willie Week and other workshops. I was wondering if there has been one that’s had a real lasting significant impact on your flute playing. If so what was it and why?

I don’t have a lot of time or money and am trying to make a decision between attending the flute symposium here in Seattle and taking lessons for an extended period of time. A while ago I spoke with Hans Araki and he would be able to give me lessons.

Any thoughts?

I would go for the one-on-one lessons. Araki is a good musician.

Araki is an exceptional musician.
There is no substitute for a good teacher.
Even one lesson with a good teacher can change one’s understanding of their instrument and music forever. I’ve had good teachers who game enough in one lesson to spend months, if not a lifetime, working on.
Take a lesson and decide if you want more.
You’ll be happy you did.
Best,
Chris

I have taken lessons before from someone else when I was just beginning.

Part of my earlier frustration was that I was being taught a classical style embouchure. I finally quit lessons and feel I made more progress on my own.

Maybe now that I have more experience lessons will be more worth while. Hans is a great player and very disciplined from his background with Shakuhachi.
