The Aran Islands, situated of the west coast of Ireland, in front of Galway Bay, have given their name to this particular and famous knitting-product. This film represents the story of the Aran Jumper, a garment, hand-knitted since generations in its own typical and traditional Irish style. Based on its natural tradition, the Aran Jumper became very popular and their pure patterns gave so many inspirations even to the biggest fashion creators.
My Mother user to be a champion hand-knitter, and knitted on a commercial basis for the shop my Father and her ran. She used to knit Aran sweaters by hand, without a pattern. I still have one that she knitted for me - she passed away before the turn of the century. It bears her label: “Hand-knitted by Dorathea Cairns”. She knitted one for a friend of mine who then lived in Kentucky. It had cable-stitch, Moss-stitch, Grass-stitch - the lot. Lovely and warm, and waterproof too, with the lanolin still on the wool. She was a maker, My Mother. She never sat still, but was always doing.
