The first two tunes I learned were Dawning of the Day and Star of the County Down. Both are nice melodies and pretty simple. They sound great without any ornamentation. After five years of playing the whistle I still play them often.

I’ll second the Si Bheag, Si Mhor as a great tune for beginners. I got a whistle at ZoukFest last month and that was the first tune I learned top to bottom. I’m now moving up to Rakes of Kildare/Morrison’s, Swallowtail, and some other more seisiun-friendly tunes.
