Twice during the past 4 months I’ve been asked if I’m still playing the whistle. When I said that I was learning the Uillean pipes, they said what? I said, you know, Irish pipes and made bellows movements with my arm. Then they said Oh that’s the ones you play with your leg, isn’t it? 
Scary or what?

I bought a practice set from Joe McKenna back in 1978, and after a few years of learning brought the set to the home of a fiddler friend of mine to have a few tunes. The fiddler’s housemate was an American woman who’d just returned home after spending several months in Ireland. When I got out the pipes, she asked, “What’s that?” I explained that it was a practice set of uilleann pipes, the Irish bellows-blown bagpipes, and she said, “oh no it’s not, I’ve seen those pipes, and this is nothing like them.” I explained further that a practice set is just the bag, bellows, and chanter, and doesn’t include the drones or regulators, and I described to her what a full set would look like, and the differences between the Irish pipes and the Scottish highland pipes. “No,” she insisted, “what you have here is not the Irish bagpipes. You’ve been cheated. You’ve got to call the man who made it for you and demand a full refund.”

You might have suggested that she get a refund on her holiday trip.

One indeed uses the leg…
to hold popping strap such that the chanter can be sealed
to move the regs into place for easy access
to kick the guy attempting theft of your Guinness

Yep.. thems Leg Pipes alright. Quite a different Pipe than the Arm Pipes.
“It only looks like im playing them with my leg..”
