Tablature for the Irish Washerwoman?

I’ve been looking all over the place for tabs for the Irish Washerwoman, to no avail. I can’t read music, despite many attempts to learn, so that option is out. I’ve found several books that purport to contain tabs for this tune, but I don’t want to shell out the $'s for tabs for one song.

Does anybody know of a free online source for what I am seeking? Or alternatively, would anyone who has such tablature in digital form be willing to e-mail it to me?

I thank everyone in advance for their help, and I feel compelled to add that ever since I started playing this gem of an instrument, I’ve fallen in love with it, as well as traditional music in general.

Y’know, it’s funny… I’ve was born and raised in West Virginia, and have lived here most of my life, and I always used to ridicule bluegrass, old-time, and the like as antiquated styles best left to historical re-enactments of various sorts.

No longer is that the case. These kinds of traditional music have more soul to them than any other, as far as I’m concerned. And I am very proud to say that I am working diligently to become sufficiently proficient with this eminently suitable instument in order to become a part of the traditional music scene. [ Yeah, I know, I like big words. :slight_smile: ]

It has ABC tablature, as well as sheet music.

Find a midi of the tune you want,
(or the ABC and paste it into the concertina.net tunatron)
install vanbasco’s karaoke - and open the midi file with it.
It gives you the whistle tabulature, and you can slow it
down, and change the key.
You can also print the tab’ out, but I
can’t remember exactly how.
The programme will tell you though.

OK, I d/l’ed and installed VanBasco’s Karaoke player, but the only graphical representation I see is a piano keyboard. Is there some way to change it into a whistle? I’ve been looking all through the program and I can’t seem to find such an option.

Maybe my Midi file is encoded natively in Piano form… Hmm.. Any advice?

Mojo, there’s a version of The Irish Washerwoman with pennywhistle tab in a tiny book by Mel Bay called Irish Tin Whistle Music Pocketbook. It can be bought through Elderly Music or The Whistle Shop for less than a dollar, not counting S&H. But, I have a extra copy. There is a way to represent Penny Whistle fingering using Word.
You need to install a new font (TTF).

Here is the font that you will need to download.

Once downloaded, you will then need to copy the file into the location with your other fonts…

Here is how to do it… locate the file (whistle.ttf) on your computer that you have just downloaded. Select the file and copy it (Ctrl C). Open your font directory by clicking on Start then select /Control Panel/Fonts and Edit/Paste the File to that location.

Now, when you open Word, you will now have a new font to use called Penny Whistle Tablature…

Highlight or enter your text, select Format/Font and choose Penny Whistle Tablature from the drop down list. By typing the letter of the note, you will actually see the notation instead of the letter.

Lower case is the lower octave and Upper case is the second octave. Unfortunately, this is the reverse of ABC notation. If you want to use ABC as your starting point, highlight the text in Word and then use, Format/Change case/Toggle.

Using www.thesession.org locate the Irish Washerwoman ABC. Here is what part of it will look like:

BGG DGG|BGB dcB|cBc Adc|BGG G3:|

As described above highlight and toggle the characters so that you end up with this:

bgg dgg|bgb DCb|Caa eaa|CaC EDC|

You now highlight the letters again and change the font to the Penny Whistle tablature.

You may want to increase the font size to make it readable.

You should end up with something that looks like this:





Using this technique, you will be able to create Penny Whistle tablature from any ABC tunesource.

Gulp!

I just swapped my computer, and couldn’t be bothered to get my old software off my backup drive, and downloaded the player from the site.
I have to say that it has changed!
I’ll try to find the older version, because all you had to do was
pick the instrument tabulature you wanted to see,
and play along with it.
To print it out you just right clicked on the display
and saved it to the clipbooard, then pasted it into your
word processor using the whistle font as per above.

I’ll dig it out in a while, and put it on one of the file share places.
Meanwhile, others advice looks good to me.
