I am planning on getting rid of Nortons anti virus and switching to the free AVG. Any advice or experience on this?
I kind of feel a distant fear of problems. is that warranted?

Yes, but mostly on the removing Norton side of things.
Do some Google-y research about removing your version
of Norton. Download the appropriate removal tool from
the Symantec site before trying anything else.
